'Come Fall in Love' musical, based on hit Indian film 'DDLJ,' to premiere in the 2022-23 Broadway season
The musical is based on the 1995 movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, one of Bollywood's most successful films.
There's going to be a new musical to fall in love with next season. Yash Raj Films, India's largest film studio, will produce a new musical adaptation of the film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge titled Come Fall in Love - The DDLJ Musical. The musical will make its world premiere at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego in September 2022 before transferring to Broadway in the 2022-23 season.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, translated as The Big-Hearted Will Take the Bride, is colloquially known as DDLJ. The movie and musical center around a young Indian American woman named Simran, whose family lives in Boston. Simran's father has arranged for her to marry a family friend in India who she has never met, and she doesn't want to follow through. Before she goes to India, she convinces her father to let her spend a fun summer in Europe. There, she falls in love with Rog (called Raj in the film), and she must convince her father to let her follow her heart.
Aditya Chopra made his directorial debut with the 1995 film, which eventually became the longest-running film in Indian cinema history, as it is still playing in theatres more than 25 years later. Now, Chopra will return to direct the musical adaptation. The Come Fall in Love creative team also includes Tony Award-winning choreographer Rob Ashford, Tony-nominated book writer and lyricist Nell Benjamin, and popular Indian songwriters, performers, and composers Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani, who wrote the musical's score. Set design is by Derek McLane, and music supervision is by Bill Sherman.
Casting, additional creative team members, and a Broadway venue and dates have yet to be announced.
