A SHERLOCK CAROL: "Unraveling Sherlock Holmes" with Drew McVety

You might guess from the title which two fictional worlds are mashed up in the *A Sherlock Carol* play. Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective, Sherlock Holmes, is dropped into the world of *A Christmas Carol*, where Tiny Tim is now grown and Ebenezer Scrooge is dead. Tim enlists Holmes’s help to investigate Scrooge’s death, which happened under mysterious circumstances. Holmes agrees, as his longtime foe Moriarty has also died and he needs a new sense of purpose. But while investigating Scrooge, Holmes is visited by some familiar haunts of the old man: the ghosts of present, past, and future.

The *A Sherlock Carol* play, as described by playwright Mark Shanahan, invites audiences of all ages to see characters they think they know well in a whole new light and delight in the Christmas spirits that now haunt the characters. Shanahan also directs *A Sherlock Carol* Off-Broadway, and the production also features lighting design by Rui Rita, sound design by John Gromada, costumes by Linda Cho, and set design by Anna Louizos. ## What to Watch For
- Playwright Mark Shanahan and Drew McVety, who plays Sherlock Holmes, previously acted together in Conor McPherson’s play *The Weir*, which incorporates stories of the supernatural. After seeing his performance, Shanahan wanted to write a play to cast McVety in, and McVety encouraged him to write *A Sherlock Carol* while in their dressing room.
- Arthur Conan Doyle sets one of his Sherlock Holmes short stories at Christmastime: *The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle*, in which Holmes investigates the theft of a valuable gemstone.
- Victorian buyers were really in the holiday spirit! Charles Dickens’ original *A Christmas Carol* novel was first published on Dec. 19, 1843, and by Christmas Eve five days later, all 6,000 copies were sold. The book has never been out of print since.
- In 2012, Sherlock Holmes received the Guinness World Record for the most-portrayed human literary character in film and TV, beating out Hamlet with 48 films, TV series, dramas, and documentaries featuring Holmes in existence as of then. Now “stage portrayals” can join the list!
- Sherlock Holmes has nothing on Ebenezer Scrooge, though. *A Christmas Carol* has received hundreds of adaptations between direct film, TV, and stage adaptations; films, shows, and plays based on Dickens’ premise and characters; adaptations for radio, video games, and graphic novels; and parodies.

As quickly as the holidays come around, so does another iteration of Charles Dickens's 1843 tale, A Christmas Carol. This season, Mark Shanahan samples Dickens' Christmas classic and blends two of the most famous storybook characters, Scrooge and Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, to create <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/a-sherlock-carol" target="_blank">A Sherlock Carol</a>, a merry yet uneventful production open now off Broadway at <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/new-world-stages" target="_blank">New World Stages</a>.In Shanahan's story, also under his own direction, the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge morphs into a coy murder mystery. Set in 1894 London, Sherlock Holmes (an amusing Drew McVety) is trying to find his way after the death of his nemesis, Professor James Moriarty. Tiny Tim (a delightful Dan Domingues) is all grown up; Fezziwig is still around throwing parties;&nbsp;Scrooge (an exceptional Thom Sesma) has been found dead;&nbsp;and the famous sleuth is tasked with solving the crime. Only, in this story, Mr. Holmes has taken over as the town's miser and there are no three ghosts to help turn him back on track. This Holmes is course and cranky, and uncharacteristically apprehensive to solving mysteries. It's only after Tiny Tim, now a doctor and Scrooge's benefactor, begs Holmes to take on the case, does he hesitantly oblige.The new holiday play works an exciting and refreshing script to the otherwise overdone classic story but the plot doesn't quite come together smoothly on stage. At times, the staging becomes erratic and cluttered and can become hard to follow if you are unfamiliar with the many plot references, but fans of both stories may find pleasure in knowing that content doesn't stray too far from the originals. Both Anissa Felix and Isabel Keating offer exciting energy to the production as they each play multiple characters in perfect distinctness. They bring in different interest with every character swap.The set designed by Anna Louizos, famous for her Tony Award-nominated designs for In The Heights and High Fidelity, doesn't offer the traditional holiday fluff associated with your typical A Christmas Carol productions. There are no sparkling lights, falling snow, or over-the-top décor. Instead she serves careful minimalism, only offering a picturesque city backdrop, gas light posts, a Christmas wreath, and a peak into Scrooge's underdone home. What lacks in set design picks up in Linda Cho's period costume looks. The design features dark colored tailored suits and top hats that mesh well against the fluffy period dressy and bonnets.The beauty of A Christmas Carol is that it's become a part of an annual tradition. The holiday season would feel incomplete without a production of the beloved tale. While sometimes overdone, and overconsumed, if the yuletide is not broken, why rewrite it? A Sherlock Carol offers a unique reworking but doesn't leave its audience feeling the magic of Christmas, the triumph of solving a crime, or the need to see it again. It's a good attempt at a new story but if I, or this audience absolutely needed it, is still a mystery.<div><a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/a-sherlock-carol" target="_blank">A Sherlock Carol is at New World Stages. Located beneath the Worldwide Plaza between Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen, New World Stages is a modern performing arts complex with five theatres for Off-Broadway productions.

The building was constructed in 1994 on the site of the third Madison Square Garden. It first opened as a Loews Cineplex Entertainment multiplex cinema, which closed in 2001.

For the next three years, the building underwent substantial renovations and finally reopened as Dodger Stages in 2004, designed by architects Beyer, Blinder, and Belle. The theatre complex was renamed New World Stages on March 16, 2006, and Stage Entertainment assumed sole ownership of the property. The Shubert Organization took over ownership and operation on November 17, 2017.

All five spaces have between 100 and 500 seats, officially deeming New World Stages an Off-Broadway venue. Stage 1 and Stage 3 are the largest theatres in the complex with 499 seats. Stages 2 and 4 offer a 350-seat capacity. Stage 5 is the smallest venue with 199 seats. The Green Room is the official bar and lounge for New World Stages, but it can also be a performance space.

## How to get to New World Stages off Broadway

New World Stages is closest to the 50th St. subway stop on the C and E lines. The nearest bus stop is 9 Av./W 50 St. on the M11 line.

## Where is *The Play That Goes Wrong* playing?

*The Play That Goes Wrong* is at New World Stages' Stage 4. The comedy play made its Broadway debut in 2017, and after running there for two years, it transferred off Broadway.

Previous productions that enjoyed long Off-Broadway runs at New World Stages after closing on Broadway are *Jersey Boys* and *Avenue Q*.
