About ANON

Get ANON tickets on New York Theatre Guide to see this subversive and thrilling new play that explores today's politics and how we perform them on social media. Playwright Anne Washburn is a theatre legend thanks to her trailblazing works like Mr. Burns, a post-electric play, and she now teams up with Tony Award nominee Anne Kauffman (Mary Jane, Marjorie Prime) who directs ANON in New York City.

In Washburn's latest, Jeanie lives in the Texas suburbs and is spending more and more time on TikTok. Soon, a gay Pride flag is raised across the street, leading two very different households to... really freak out. In ANON off Broadway, Washburn explores how how hyperonline lifestyles fade the line between reality and fantasy, and how optional it is becoming to live in the present with our neighbors, and with our own selves.

In this newest work, Washburn is peering deep into America's soul, blending themes of technology, political fracture, and increasing isolation. Washburn is known for taking on topics that seem simplistic and giving them a sharp, theatrical edge. That makes her a great match for Kauffman, who has made a career of championing and directing bold, new American plays.

ANON plays for a limited run this fall, starting September 25 at The Newman Mills Theatre at the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theatre Space. With shows like Birthright and Caroline, MCC has proven itself to be a rigorous chronicler of today's issues. The cast of this work also features a class of top-tier theatre performers, including Jeff Biehl, Crystal Finn, Andrew Garman, Izabel Mar, and Jeremy Shamos.

A play about a woman who loses her mind after conspiracy theories and the real world who lives around her.

A very current play that asks a lot of questions without dictating answers. I appreciated the dark-ish humor, which lightened the tone without sacrificing the seriousness of the themes.

I loved Washburn's Mr. Burns and was therefore disappointed by this play which did not seem to explore anything new about conspiracy theory adherents. I thought the acting was good and the production was interesting and attractive, but not sure what the play as a whole had to say.
