About Ms. Blakk for President
Introducing Joan Jett Blakk — the first (and only) Black Drag Queen Candidate for President of the United States of America. It’s the early 90s, the height of the AIDS epidemic, and Joan and the newly formed Queer Nation Chicago set off on an exhilarating and dangerous journey to drag queer politics out of the closet — and onto the floor of the DNC. Inspired — but not bound — by the true story of drag performer and activist Terence Alan Smith, Ms. Blakk For President is a joyous stampede through urgent and unfinished business. Part campaign rally, part nightclub performance, part confessional — and all party — this singular new work by Tina Landau and Tarell Alvin McCraney stars Ato Blankson-Wood as the incomparable Joan/Terence.
Ms. Blakk for President is an immersive, club venue spectacle, with song, dance, a live band and a lot of history of the 1980s/1990s with drag queen Joan Jett Blackk's run for mayor of Chicago and eventually for POTUS at the 1992 Democratic National Convention. A joy filled rave of an evening at the Vineyard Theater.
Fun night, good performances and relevant, timely story.
Ms. Blakk is a wild ride. Political statement, party, concert, play, extravaganza. It is so very queer in the best way. The cast was amazing. Playing several roles and constantly on the move. Ato Blankson Wood was divine going back and forth between comedy and devastating drama. The band sounded so good, the singing was fantastic. Big shout out to Sawyer Smith. She killed every role and song she was thrown- not to mention LEGS ! I would definitely go back.
