Montano has appeared in big shows such as On the Town, Cats, and Kiss of the Spider Woman opposite Chita Rivera. He discusses those in his play, which also speaks to universal themes of family and perseverance. Small is a lively and exuberant solo performance that was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award nominee for Outstanding Solo Performance; it acts as a promise and message for anyone who has ever had big dreams they felt were out of reach.

Endlessly entertaining, "Small" tells the story of Robert Montano--the show's creator and star--as it follows his improbable journey from teenaged jockey (after being introduced to the exciting world of horse racing by his mother, he can't wait to climb into the saddle himself) to, of all things, dancing alongside some of Broadway's biggest names in one hit musical after another. From the moment he meets his mom's favorite rider--a seasoned vet who would go on to become Robert's hero and mentor--to his self-destructive efforts to keep his weight down (another problem was his height; soon, he had simply grown too tall to be a jockey), to his departure for the New York stage, we see it all; and thanks to his extraordinary gift for mimicry (he plays everyone, including grizzled old racetrack pros, casting directors and choreographers, and even his mom) and balletic grace, "Small" is gorgeous, funny, frequently sad, and one of the most captivating solo shows you'll ever see. If it ever comes back, do yourself a favor and buy a ticket. Like the first-place finisher in a Triple Crown race, it's a winner.
One person show with actor playing multiple characters vividly. It's about the world of horse jockeys. A subject rarely portrayed in theater.
