Get tickets to No Singing in the Navy when they go on sale with New York Theatre Guide to see this uproarious new musical from the singular mind of Milo Cramer. The playwright returns to Playwrights Horizons after his las show there, School Pictures, took home an Obie Award and won rave reviews. Now, No Singing in the Navy comes to 42nd Street: this three-actor, one-piano musical is a hilarious spoof of the classic American musical that also dissects its obsession with innocence. Get ready to set sail with a naughty, nautical tale.
In No Singing in the Navy off Broadway, meet three silly sailors with a hundred bucks in hand and 24 hours on leave. They are ready to live as much life as they possibly can before getting shipped off to war — and certainly to death. A funny attack on the “golden age” of musicals, No Singing in the Navy is a delightfully sardonic explosion of the myth of American innocence.
Downtown shows like School Pictures, Business Ideas, and Cute Activist have helped Cramer carve out a name for himself as a twee, smart writer: "What Milo Cramer is doing is simply structured, generously conceived, full — inside its simple container — of irresolvable yearning and wondering, guessing and risking — and it’s completely wonderful," Sara Holdren wrote of his work for Vulture.
Aysan Celik, an Associate Artist of the Obie Award-winning companies Theater Mitu and The Civilians, directs this new play, running for a limited time only this spring at Playwrights' Peter Jay Sharp Theater. The play is part of the theatre's 2025/26 season, which Artistic Director Adam Greenfield calls "a wild mash-up of works on both grand and intimate scales, each one fresh-eyed and curious."
