About Marcel on the Train

Se Broadway's original SponeBob and Tony Award nominee Ethan Slater star in this thrilling new show about the life of one of the world's most celebrated mimes. A look at the life of Marcel Marceau as he helps Jewish children escape Nazism during World War II, Marcel on the Train plays at Classic Stage Company this season for a limited run only.

Don't miss Marcel on the Train off Broadway: Slater, an international star known for playing Boq int the two Wicked movies, shows off a new skill in this special play. Not only does he co-write the play, he stars as one of history's most famous mimes who performed extraordinary skills onstage, and off: during World War II, Marceau played a key role in helping Jewish children escape as Nazis were on the rise. Marceau's own father was captured by the Gestapo and deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he was killed, so the mime became known for more than his entertainment skills.

Marceau referred to mime as the "art of silence", performing professionally worldwide for more than 60 years. Now, Slater co-writes this new play with Marshall Pailet, who was a a child performer on Broadway before going on to write the book, music, lyrics, and direct, the musical Private Jones, which received the Helen Hayes for Best New Musical.

Slater was so excited about the potential of this new play, he texted Pailet about it on the day of his first child's birth. In his bio, Pailet notes that, "It was a very short and tired conversation ending with Ethan saying...maybe this isn’t the best time.”
