About Jonah

Roundabout Theatre Company presents the world premiere of Rachel Bonds's Jonah, a coming-of-age tale with a twist, off Broadway. Get Jonah tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

The Jonah play actually centers on a girl named Ana, on scholarship at a boarding school far from home. Like everyone else, she has a fantasy, and she'd do anything for hers to be real — or just to feel a little less alone. When she meets Jonah, a sweet fellow student, she thinks he'll be the one to make that happen. But what starts off as a romance turns into a survival tale as Jonah — and not only him — reveals he's not everything he seems.

Bonds is doubly represented off Broadway this season: Shortly after Jonah off Broadway, MCC Theater presents the New York premiere of her musical The Lonely Few. She wrote the book and collaborated with composer/lyricist Zoe Sarnak. Her other plays include Michael & Edie and Sundown, Yellow Moon, both of which were New York Times Critic's Picks. Bonds is also a writer for screen and podcast formats, currently developing an original series called The Heart of It All for Audible.

Danya Taymor directs Jonah in New York, also collaborating with Bonds to develop the play. Taymor is also doubly represented in the spring 2024 theatre season; she also stages the musical adaptation of The Outsiders on Broadway. She's also known for staging Pass Over on and off Broadway, as well as the Off-Broadway premiere of Will Arbery's Pulitzer Prize-nominated play Heroes of the Fourth Turning.

Great writing, Thought-provoking, Intelligent

See it if you are looking for a gripping play that keeps you thinking as it unfolds. The story did not drag. Great acting through out.

Don’t see it if you can’t stay focused on a story that jumps to different periods in the character’s life.
