Without You is a musical, based on Rapp's New York Times bestselling memoir, about the show that changed his life. He shares how at 22, he was working at Starbucks and low on money — and then came an audition for a new show called Rent. Rapp didn't know it yet, but Jonathan Larson's rock musical about bohemian New Yorkers living through the AIDS crisis would soon revolutionize the modern musical and cement Larson in theatre history.
But on the day of Rent's first-ever performance off Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop, Larson died. With Rent songs, original music, and personal anecdotes, Rapp pays tribute to Larson in Without You and the love, loss, and life-changing experiences being a part of Rent brought him.
Rapp originated the lead role of filmmaker Mark Cohen off Broadway in 1996, on Broadway later that year, and in London in 1998. His other Broadway credits include Six Degrees of Separation, You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and If/Then, which also featured his Rent co-star Idina Menzel.
Rapp published Without You in 2006 and first turned the book into a stage show in 2012. He has performed that version in London, Edinburgh, Toronto, Boston, and more, but Without You off Broadway is its first production in New York. Though Without You is called a one-man show, Rapp is accompanied on stage by a five-piece band as he performs songs like "La Vie Boheme," a flagship Rent song, and "Losing My Religion" by R.E.M., which he used to audition for Rent back in the '90s.
