Walking with Ghosts Information

Gabriel Byrne, a Golden Globe-winning and two-time Tony-nominated stage and screen actor, brings his acclaimed solo show, Walking with Ghosts, to Broadway for 75 performances only. Get Walking with Ghosts tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Walking with Ghosts is adapted from, and named after, Byrne's bestselling 2020 memoir. In the book and the show, Byrne discusses his childhood in Ireland, his experiences as an immigrant leaving that homeland, and his search for a place to belong. He discusses how that now-bygone Ireland, plus many other people and places from his past, have shaped his character and his life. He even discusses becoming a celebrity and his subversive views on fame.

All those elements of the show are the "ghosts" of the title — in an interview with The New York Times, Byrne said the "ghosts" aren't literal ones, but the memories of people, places, and experiences we all carry with us through life. He continued, "My own belief is that every single person has an extraordinary story to tell and what I've done is I've put mine down, not because I want people to think or look at my life. I want people to look at their own."

Byrne has indeed had an extraordinary life and career. He began his onscreen acting career with the TV show The Riordans in 1978, and in the four-plus decades since, Byrne has appeared in more than 80 movies including Excalibur, Vanity Fair, The Man in the Iron Mask, Little Women, and Hereditary. He's also a TV actor best known for the HBO miniseries In Treatment; his performance as Paul Weston earned him a Golden Globe Award and two Emmy nominations.

On stage, Byrne has been on Broadway three times before, in A Moon for the Misbegotten (Tony nomination), A Touch of the Poet (Outer Critics Circle Award win), and Long Day's Journey into Night (Tony nomination). With Walking with Ghosts in New York, Byrne returns to the Broadway stage for the first time in six years. He also reunites with director Lonny Price, who previously directed Byrne in a New York Philharmonic concert staging of Camelot in 2008.

Before the premiere of Walking with Ghosts on Broadway, Byrne debuted the show in January 2022 at Dublin's Gaiety Theatre and performed a weeklong engagement in London's West End in September.

Our review

The stage is set for memory lane at Gabriel Byrne’s low-simmering solo show Walking with Ghosts. A series of prosceniums that successively shrink as they recede from the audience simply and efficiently suggest traveling backward. That’s where the Irish author and actor heads in his adaptation of his 2021 memoir of the same title. Beyond some lighting cues and bits of music, the 2-hour production directed by Lonny Price (Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill) is essentially a no-frills affair. Its...
