There are certain places that, at first glance, don't exactly scream "comedy." The gallows. The White House. A Neo-Nazi meeting. The end of the world. And yet, playwrights have not only set shows at each of these places, but received acclaim and awards for doing so. Gracie Gardner, in her Off-Broadway-debut play I'm Revolting, adds "skin cancer clinic" to that list. Whether she wins any awards for it has yet to be seen (she already has a Relentless Award, among others, for her show PussySludge),...

I’m Revolting Information
Gracie Gardner's play I'm Revolting is at Atlantic Theater Company in fall 2022. Get I'm Revolting tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
I'm Revolting is a play set at a skin cancer clinic — "not the famous one," the show's description notes. There, multiple patients are in the waiting room, about to learn what parts of themselves, and how much, they're going to lose. Not everyone in the room is a skin cancer patient; some are just there for support, but regardless, nobody wants to be called into the doctor's office. The play explores what it means to live in a body, particularly one that isn't working as it should, and what it's like to deal with those — or be those — that don't quite understand.
Gardner makes her Off-Broadway debut with this show, though her work has already been produced and acclaimed in New York and abroad. Her play Athena, centered on two teenage girls training for a fencing competition, was produced Off-Off-Broadway in 2018. It was a New York Times Critics' Pick; the review reads, "It's important... to see playwrights and producers deciding that stories about the awful, wonderful, completely ordinary business of growing up in a woman's body are worth telling."
In addition, Gardner received the 2018 Relentless Award for her play Pussy Sludge. That show was developed at HERE Arts Center and London's Old Vic theatre, and was performed at the Theatertreffen Stückemarkt in Berlin, Germany. Her other plays include Hate Baby (which won the James Stevenson Prize), Golden Boys, In the Blind, and This One Is Set in a Spa.
Directing I'm Revolting off Broadway is Knud Adams, who directed Sanaz Toossi's English in 2022. New York Theatre Guide called English "among the best new plays of the season" in a five-star review: "Knud Adams beautifully directs the world premiere from Atlantic Theater Company and Roundabout Theatre Company with a fluid assurance." The play went on to win the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play.
