Poor Yella Rednecks Information
After the production was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Manhattan Theatre Club begins its 2023-24 Off-Broadway season with the New York premiere of Poor Yella Rednecks, written by Qui Nguyen and directed by May Adrales. Check back to see when Poor Yella Rednecks tickets will be on sale on New York Theatre Guide.
The Poor Yella Rednecks play is based on the history and experiences of Nguyen's own family, who emigrated from Vietnam and became refugees in America. Nguyen's play Vietgone retells the story of how his Vietnamese parents met and became American refugees, and Poor Yella Rednecks is its sequel and the second installment of a trilogy.
Poor Yella Rednecks tells, from the perspective of the mother, how she and her new family attempt to put down roots in Arkansas and adapt to an entirely different landscape and way of life.
The show is not a musical, but Poor Yella Rednecks is a play with original music. Nguyen also infuses satirical humor and pop culture references into his portrait of the family's attempts to chase the American Dream.
May Adrales, who directed Vietgone at Manhattan Theatre Club in 2016, returns to direct Poor Yella Rednecks off Broadway at the same theatre company. May Adrales's 10-year Off-Broadway career includes productions like Golden Shield and Letters of Suresh.
