About Poor Yella Rednecks

After the production was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Manhattan Theatre Club begins its 2023-24 Off-Broadway season with the New York premiere of Poor Yella Rednecks, written by Qui Nguyen and directed by May Adrales. Get Poor Yella Rednecks tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

The Poor Yella Rednecks play is based on the history and experiences of Nguyen's own family, who emigrated from Vietnam and became refugees in America. Nguyen's play Vietgone retells the story of how his Vietnamese parents met and became American refugees, and Poor Yella Rednecks is its sequel and the second installment of a trilogy.

Poor Yella Rednecks tells, from the perspective of the mother, how she and her new family attempt to put down roots in Arkansas and adapt to an entirely different landscape and way of life.

The show is not a musical, but Poor Yella Rednecks is a play with original music. Nguyen also infuses satirical humor and pop culture references into his portrait of the family's attempts to chase the American Dream.

May Adrales, who directed Vietgone at Manhattan Theatre Club in 2016, returns to direct Poor Yella Rednecks off Broadway at the same theatre company. May Adrales's 10-year Off-Broadway career includes productions like Golden Shield and Letters of Suresh.

Delightful, Fantastic staging & production quality, Totally entertaining

See it if a show with a lot of different elements that work well together. Cast overflowing with charisma. Outstanding looking staging. Fun.

Don’t see it if you are put off by bad language. Profanity may be overused in order to feel contemporary.

See it if dramedy with cool staging, a puppet and the occasional rap.

Don’t see it if Lots of profanity and tone shifts between absurd and serious frequently

Quirky, Great staging, Funny, Entertaining, Absorbing

See it if Nice staging, rap songs that you can understand, and the history of Vietnamese immigrants' lives in America. The fight scene is hilarious

Don’t see it if "F" word was used too often (for some). Do not want to hear that immigrants were unable to find a good job or had problems at school

Story of vietnamese immigrant family, Trying vs odds 2 make arkansas their home, Played as comic book come alive

See it if tells complng story thru unique combo profane rap/moving puppetry/side-splitting movie&kung-fu parodies/stunning enlrgd graphic novel panels

Don’t see it if turned off by cartoonish chrctrs/embarrassingly simplistic rap/2 much "we are the heroes of our own story" chest-thumping
