Wish You Were Here is a play set on the cusp of the Iranian Revolution, which would eventually see the fall of the Iranian monarchy in 1979. But a year earlier, in 1978, protests are rapidly erupting, and one group of women in Iran is trying to hold on to whatever normalcy they can. The close-knit friend group plans weddings, tells each other jokes, does whatever they can to distract themselves from the turmoil happening around them.

Soon enough, though, they can't distract themselves any longer, and each woman is faced with an impossible choice: emigrate or stay? Whether they choose to flee the protests or remain in their home country, they face a difficult, uncertain future, and the unraveling of their close friendships. Wish You Were Here takes place over the course of a decade as these women each make their choices and build new lives, but perhaps lose each other and the only home they know.

Sanaz Toossi is an Iranian American playwright who often writes about the Iranian experience. Her play English, which follows four adult students preparing for the Test of English as a Foreign Language, is also off Broadway this season at Atlantic Theater Company. Playwrights Horizons's production of Wish You Were Here off Broadway marks the play's world premiere. The show was supposed to debut at Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2020, but the event was canceled due to the pandemic. Even before being produced, though, Wish You Were Here already received the Edgerton Foundation New Play Award.

With breathtaking humanity and cutting wit, Wish You Were Here chronicles a decade of life during war, as best friends forever become friends long lost, scattered and searching for home. Our review

In Sanaz Toosi's Wish You Were Here, five Iranian women grow together and apart from each over the course of 13 years. Their conflicts transcend the simple mundanites that comprise modern friendships. Though those issues (petty rivalries and jealousy) also appear, they play second fiddle to the compromises and personality changes that each woman is forced to undergo in the face of violent revolution. The year is 1978, and five women have joined to celebrate Salme's (Roxanna Hope Radja) wedding....
