Hangmen on Broadway Information

The Royal Court Theatre/Atlantic Theater Company production of Academy and Olivier Award winner Martin McDonagh’s comedy Hangmen, directed by Olivier Award nominee Matthew Dunster, returns to Broadway in April 2022. Originally scheduled for a 2020 run, the show closed due to the pandemic after 13 previews and planned to close permanently. But now, this dark comedy play is returning to the Golden Theatre. Hangmen tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.

Hangmen is a play that takes place in 1960s Britain, just after hanging has been abolished. Suddenly, everyone wants to snag an interview with Harry, Britain's second-most famous executioner and a local celebrity, to get his reaction to the news for the papers. But amid the cub reporters and pub patrons enters a stranger named Mooney, a Londoner who doesn't fit in with the others. Aside from his different way of dressing, he also has a very different motive for being there.

Hangmen staged its world premiere at the Royal Court Theatre in London in September 2015, transferring to the West End's Wyndham's Theatre in December of that year and ultimately winning Best New Play at the 2016 Olivier Awards. The debut of Hangmen off Broadway was subsequently presented by Atlantic Theater Company from January through March 2018.

British-Irish playwright Martin McDonagh is renowned for his dark sense of humor and is known for his Oscar-nominated screenplays of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and In Bruges. He also served as director for those feature films and, in addition, he wrote and directed the acclaimed 2012 movie Seven Psychopaths. A four-time Tony Award nominee, McDonagh has been equally successful on Broadway as on the silver screen. Hangmen marks his seventh Broadway credit, after previous productions of The Cripple of Inishmaan starring Daniel Radcliffe, A Behanding in Spokane, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Pillowman, The Lonesome West, and The Beauty Queen of Leenane between 1998 and 2014.

Hangmen on Broadway is a wickedly funny slice of Great British drama, and it's sure to rope audiences in.

From the devilishly inspired mind of Martin McDonagh—Academy Award®-winning writer of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri—comes Hangmen, a killer comedy. What’s Britain’s second-most famous executioner to do now that hanging has been abolished? Drink, of course. But when a cub reporter and a mysterious stranger turn up at his pub, everything hangs in the balance. Hangmen marks McDonagh’s seventh play on Broadway, following his Tony®-nominated productions of The Pillowman and The Lieutenant of Inishmore. Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Play, Hangmen arrives at the Golden Theatre on April 8 after multiple sold-out engagements in London and Off-Broadway’s Atlantic Theatre Company.

Hangmen

"If they've got to go, they've got to go by the quickest, the most dignified, and the least painful way of going as possible," says Harry (David Threlfall), the former hangman determined to make the horrificness of capital punishment sound honorable.Martin McDonagh's dark comedy Hangmen, directed by Matthew Dunster at Broadway's Golden Theatre, tries to do too many things. The play, which first premiered in London in 2015 ahead of a sold-out Off-Broadway run in 2018, attempts to battle with, and...

Hangmen

If you hang around the Theatre District regularly, you've probably noticed the (appropriately) bright yellow marquee on the Golden Theatre advertising Martin McDonagh's Hangmen. The dark comedy play centers on the former hangman Harry Wade, who becomes a local pub owner after hanging gets abolished in England. Amid the pub regulars and cub reporters that show up to hear his reaction to the news and rub elbows with a once-semi-famous hangman, there's a troublemaking London stranger (played by...
