Much Ado About Nothing Information

The Public Theater launches its 2019 free Shakespeare in the Park season with Much Ado About Nothing, directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon.

Shakespeare's beloved romantic comedy was previously staged at the Delacorte Theater in 1972, 1988, 2004, and 2014.

Tickets are distributed for free in Central Park on a first come, first-served basis on the morning of each performance.

In this modern production, a bold new take on Shakespeare’s cherished comedy of romantic retribution and miscommunication, we find the community of Messina celebrating a break from an ongoing war. But not all is peaceful amid the revelry, as old rivals engage in a battle of wits, unexpected foes plot revenge, and young lovers are caught in a tumultuous courtship – until love proves the ultimate trickster, and undoes them all.

This production of Much Ado About Nothing at the Public Theater's Free Shakespeare in the Park works. It sings. It flies. Director Kenny Leon and his fine cast have imbued the production at the Delacorte Theater with a certain style, grace and spirit. Conventions are dropped by the wayside beginning with the casting. The choice of Danielle Brooks, who is, as she puts it, "a plus-sized woman" in the part of the very brave and very sort Beatrice works very well. Pairing her up with the chameleon...
