In *the bandaged place* play, a dancer named Jonah is reeling from the trauma of an assault. His recovery is further complicated by the reappearance of an old lover, which reopens old wounds. With nowhere else to turn, he turns to his grandmother and daughter for support, and discovers that healing his relationships with his family is, in fact, the only way to really heal from all the damage in his past.

With *the bandaged place* off Broadway, Harrison David Rivers makes his professional New York debut. He's a playwright and screenwriter whose work has appeared all over the country from coast to coast, at renowned institutions like Washington, D.C.'s Signature Theatre and the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts. He teams up with Off-Broadway theatre leader David Mendizábal, who directs *the bandaged place* in New York.

*the bandaged place* is a product of the Roundabout Underground program, which supports new and emerging playwrights by mounting full productions of their work in Roundabout's Black Box space.

## What to Watch For

- *the bandaged place* won the 2018 Relentless Award, a prize from The American Playwriting Foundation established in honor of the late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman. It recognizes new works that "are challenging, exhibit fearlessness, exude passion, and are relentlessly truthful."
- Director David Mendizábal is an award winner themselves. They are a producing artistic leader of Movement Theatre Company, an Off-Broadway organization that has won the Obie Award. Since the main character of *the bandaged place* is a dancer, we can expect plenty of movement throughout the show.
- Rivers has written plays as well as the books for musicals. His plays include *This Bitter Earth, Where Storms Are Born*, and *When Last We Flew*, and his musicals include *Five Points, We Shall Someday*, and *I Put a Spell on You*.
- TV fans may already be familiar with Rivers's work — he's written for shows including Peacock's *One of Us is Lying*, HBO's *The Nevers*, and Hulu's *The Plot*.

When an old lover comes into Jonah's life and reopens old wounds, he must reconnect with his family, who he's pushed away, and find strength in them in order to move on. To get right to the point: Harrison David Rivers's [*the bandaged place*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25836-the-bandaged-place-tickets) has no cuts or holes that need bandaging up. Every plot point, every character, every moment in this nearly perfect new play, presented by [Roundabout Underground](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/harold-and-miriam-steinberg-center-for-theatre), has been stitched together perfectly. It will make your heart bleed in many different ways; it is a thoughtful and excellent meditation on the long and winding road to healing.

The story centers on a dancer named Jonah, who just got out of a physically and emotionally abusive relationship. And yet, Ruben, his ex, manages to slink back into his life, knowing Jonah can't resist — restraining order be damned. Jonah is better at pushing away his grandmother Geraldine and eight-year-old daughter Ella, partly out of shame and partly as a continuation of a broken family cycle. His grandmother had pushed away his mother, who then abandoned him in childhood.

It's a dense plot for only five characters (Sam, Jonah's new lover, adds yet another layer and rounds out the count), but a sublime cast, bolstered by clear writing, tackle it with ease. Stephanie Berry, a not-so-hidden gem of the Off-Broadway scene, mines every depth of Geraldine as she actively works to make up for past mistakes with her daughter. She acts as a great foil to Jhardon DiShon Milton's volatile Jonah, who's still learning to do that; Phoenix Noelle (at the performance I attended) rounded out the family as Ella with poise. Separately, as Sam, the endearing Jake Ryan Lozano perfectly foiled Anthony Lee Medina, who brought a stomach-turning blend of sadism and sexiness to Ruben.

Every bit of their dialogue feels not only character-appropriate, but legitimately authentic. Rivers offsets Ella's precociousness, for example, with an adorably naive declaration of how relationships work: "Everyone knows about boyfriends, Nana. Almost all the girls in my class have one." That line is part of an expertly crafted scene of two conversations happening in parallel: Geraldine explains Ruben and Jonah's history in childlike terms, while Jonah does the same for Sam in adult terms. (*the bandaged place* may trigger those sensitive to abuse, including a terrifying moment of violence that is heard but, mercifully, unseen.)

Rivers seemingly leaves no detail of his play unconsidered. One scene shows Ruben gifting a necklace to Jonah, an effective metaphor for the hold Ruben has on him, even when he's absent. And there was a moment, just as I was thinking that Ruben hadn't been on stage for a while, when he suddenly appears. Whether this pacing was deliberate or not, it evidenced how trauma has a way of creeping back up just when you think it's gone.

Luckily, there are moments of lightness too, such as the tender courtship between Sam and Jonah that almost seems too perfect to be true. There's also a recurring theme of dance as a means of catharsis: From struggling to dance at the beginning as his memories (and a wounded knee, both courtesy of Ruben), paralyze him, Jonah makes progress by goofily dancing with Sam, and has a final breakthrough via a fierce pas de deux that depicts his and Ruben's entire journey. (The excellent choreography is by Tislarm Bouie.)

Though *the bandaged place* shows Jonah's considerable progress toward healing, the play avoids a neatly tied-up ending. Rivers doesn't suggest that Jonah and Sam will live happily ever after, or that Ruben will never reappear, or that Jonah and his family have fully patched up their troubles; doing so would have undermined the entire story. The ending reminds us that working through trauma is a messy and potentially neverending process, but there is hope.

'the bandaged place' review — moving new play captures the messiness of trauma and healing

Gene Feist and Elizabeth Owens founded Roundabout Theatre Company in 1965. With the support of the Steinbergs’ Charitable Trust, the Harold & Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre opened to the public in March 2004. The theatre is Roundabout's Off-Broadway home. The inaugural production at the venue was Lynn Nottage’s *Intimate Apparel*, starring Viola Davis.

The complex’s main stage is the Laura Pels Theatre, named after the Roundabout board member who previously funded the company’s first Off-Broadway home at the Criterion Center. The space originally contained 350 seats. During renovation, a 74-seat mezzanine was added to accommodate more of the company’s subscribers.

The theatre is widely used to produce premieres and revivals by established artists. In 2005, Roundabout completed work on the 62-seat Black Box Theatre in the lowest level of the complex. Besides being used as a rehearsal space and for educational programmes, it is also home to the Roundabout Underground initiative, which produces new works by emerging playwrights.

Roundabout Theatre Company also owns and operates three Broadway theatres: the [American Airlines Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/american-airlines-theatre), [Studio 54](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/studio-54), and the [Stephen Sondheim Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/stephen-sondheim-theatre), though it also rents these spaces out to non-Roundabout productions.
