First look at ‘The Music Man’ with Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster

The Hugh Jackman-led revival began performances on December 20, and the first production photo has been released.

The first production images from the latest Broadway revival of The Music Man have been released. Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster star in the new production of Meredith Willson's classic show. After being delayed more than a year due to the pandemic, the musical began performances December 20 at the Winter Garden Theatre and will officially open February 10.

In The Music Man, Jackman stars as the con man Professor Harold Hill, who goes from town to town posing as a music teacher. He tricks local bands into buying expensive instruments and uniforms from him, promising to help them improve — and then runs off with their money before teaching them a single note.

Soon, he arrives in River City, where Marian Paroo — "Marian the Librarian," played by Foster — figures out his con. But Harold's plans to disappear, and Marian's to expose him as a fraud, both get complicated when they fall for each other.

Jackman, a Tony Award winner for his 2004 Broadway debut in The Boy From Oz, was last seen on Broadway in The River, starring as The Man from 2014-2015. Foster, who last starred on Broadway in the titular role of 2014's Violet, is returning to New York after a run in Anything Goes in London's West End, where she reprised her Tony-winning performance as Reno Sweeney. Since The Music Man premiered on Broadway in 1957 (and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical), the show has been made into a movie, revived off and on Broadway (in 1965 and 2000, respectively), and been performed all over the world. Director Jerry Zaks and choreographer Warren Carlyle, the team behind the 2017 Hello, Dolly! revival starring Bette Midler, have come together again for The Music Man's latest revival in 2021.
