This is good news, no doubt about it! Roundabout Theatre Company will present the first Broadway revival of [*Doubt: A Parable*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/30042-doubt-a-parable-tickets) in February 2024, starring Tony and Emmy Award winner Tyne Daly and Tony and SAG Award winner Liev Schreiber.

Daly is a Tony Award winner for *Gypsy* and a nominee for *Mothers and Sons* and *Rabbit Hole*. She makes her Roundabout debut with *Doubt*. Schreiber has performed in *Betrayal* and *Moonlight* with Roundabout, and he received a Tony for *Glengarry Glen Ross*.

In John Patrick Shanley's play, Daly and Schreiber play Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn, respectively. Aloysius is the fearsome principal of an all-boys' Catholic school who wrestles with her morals and doubt when she suspects unseemly relations between Flynn and one of her students.

Scott Ellis directs the production, *Doubt*'s first since 2005, at the [Todd Haimes Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/todd-haimes-theatre). Additional casting, creative team, and exact performance dates have yet to be announced.

The *Doubt* play is set at St. Nicholas Church School, a fictional all-boys' Catholic school in the Bronx, in 1964. Its principal, the rigid and mistrusting Sister Aloysius, finds herself in conflict with one of her teachers, Father Flynn, who she suspects had inappropriate relations with a student during a one-on-one meeting. But what's truth, what's fiction, and what's doubt? Amid this crisis of faith, the audience gets plenty of room to decide what — and who — they believe in.

Schreiber won the 2005 Tony for performing in *Glengarry Glen Ross* and is a five-time Golden Globe and three-time Emmy nominee for playing the title role on *Ray Donovan*. Ryan, an Oscar nominee for *Gone Baby Gone*, replaces originally announced star Tyne Daly, who withdrew from the production indefinitely for a medical emergency.

Alongside these award-winning actors is an equally lauded writer. Shanley is the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of *Moonstruck*, and his extensive list of well-known plays includes *The Dreamer Examines His Pillow*, *Outside Mullingar*, and *Prodigal Son*. A few months before *Doubt* on Broadway, Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott star in a revival of his 1984 play *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea*. Shanley is also premiering and directing his newest play, *Brooklyn Laundry*, off Broadway in 2024.

There's no doubt that Liev Schreiber and Amy Ryan in John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer-winning drama is an unmissable Broadway event. Enter the halls of a private high school, where the principal's suspicions about a priest's unholy behavior could be true — or just doubt.

*Doubt: A Parable* mainly centers on the conflict between Sister Aloysius, the principal of a fictional Bronx Catholic school, and Father Flynn, one of the schoolteachers and a priest whom she suspects of unseemly relations with one of the boys.

*Doubt* premiered with Manhattan Theatre Club off Broadway in 2004 before transferring to Broadway the next year. The production starred Cherry Jones and Brían F. O'Byrne, and its four Tony Awards included Best Play and an acting win for Jones.

This time around, Amy Ryan and Liev Schreiber take on the roles of Aloysius and Flynn. Ryan is best known for her Oscar-nominated performance in *Gone Baby Gone*, Tony-nominated performances in *A Streetcar Named Desire* and *Uncle Vanya*, and fan-favorite turns on *The Office*, *Only Murders in the Building*, and *Birdman*. Schreiber is best known for his Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated performance in the title role of *Ray Donovan* and his Tony-winning performance in *Glengarry Glen Ross*.

## What to watch for

- It's the season of Shanley! Two of his plays are going up off Broadway alongside *Doubt* on Broadway: a revival of *Danny and the Deep Blue Sea* starring Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott, and the world premiere of *Brooklyn Laundry*, which Shanley also directs.
- Shanley based the character of Sister James, a young nun and teacher at the school in *Doubt*, on one of his elementary school teachers.
- Catholic school at large was a part of Shanley's own upbringing. In the program notes for *Doubt*'s Broadway premiere, he quipped that he was "thrown out of St. Helena's kindergarten, banned from St. Anthony's hot lunch program and expelled from Cardinal Spellman High School."
- *Doubt* received a 2008 film adaptation starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
- A parable is a short story meant to teach a lesson. In the Catholic Bible, Jesus commonly tells parables to his followers.

The Todd Haimes Theatre was originally designed by George Keister as an Italian Renaissance-style theatre. The venue opened in 1918 as the Selwyn Theatre, named for its developers, Edgar and Archibald Selwyn. The first show to play there was Jane Cowl's *Information Please*.

Over the course of its history, the building has been used as a theatre, a cinema, and a visitor center until it fell into a derelict state of disrepair. Roundabout Theatre Company took ownership of the venue in 1997, but the building collapsed, so the company rebuilt the Selwyn as part of the New 42nd Street Building in 1999. The theatre was renamed for American Airlines on June 30, 2000; the company donated $8.5 million to help cover renovation costs.

On February 1, 2024, the venue was renamed in memory of Todd Haimes, the artistic director of Roundabout Theatre Company from 1983 until his death in 2023.
