Second Stage Theater has announced initial casting for its production of *Spain* at the [Tony Kiser Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/tony-kiser-theater). Performances begin November 8 ahead of a November 30 opening night.

The *Spain* Off-Broadway cast includes Tony Award nominee Marin Ireland, Zachary James, and Erik Lochtefeld. Two additional cast members have yet to be announced.

*Spain* also features scenic design by Dane Laffrey, costume design by Alejo Vietti, lighting design by Jen Schriever, and original music and sound design by Daniel Kluger.

Jen Silverman's world-premiere play explores the influence art has on the world — for better or worse — by following a group of Spanish filmmakers whose game-changing war film happens to be funded by the KGB. Tyne Rafaeli directs.

It's 1936 when the *Spain* play begins in 1936, when the Spanish Civil War is in full swing. Two passionate young filmmakers get the opportunity of a lifetime to make a movie about it — and not just any movie, but a sweeping epic of a film that will change the hearts and minds of Americans. Not to mention a movie funded entirely by the KGB. As this information comes to light, the line between artistic vision and propaganda blurs.

Silverman is best known for her play *Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties*, which was nominated for the 2019 Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Play. Her other works include *The Moors* and her Off-Broadway debut play *Crane Story*.

Tyne Rafaeli directs *Spain* off Broadway. She is best known for staging the world-premiere production of Sylvia Khoury's *Selling Kabul* in 2021, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize the next year. Rafaeli's production earned two Drama League nominations: Outstanding Production of a Play and Outstanding Direction of a Play.

She and Silverman have assembled a small but mighty cast for *Spain* in New York. Among them are Andrew Burnap, a Tony Award winner for *The Inheritance*; Marin Ireland, a Tony nominee for *Reasons to Be Pretty*, and Broadway veterans Danny Wolohan, Zachary James, and Erik Lochtefeld.

In 1936, a pair of filmmakers are making a game- and mind-changing Spanish Civil War epic — that happens to be funded by the KGB. The lines between art and money, and truth and propaganda, blur in this sly, timely drama by Jen Silverman.

The cast of *Spain* includes five Broadway veterans: Tony winner Andrew Burnap (*The Inheritance*), Tony nominee Marin Ireland (*Reasons to Be Pretty*), Zachary James, Erik Lochtefeld, and Danny Wolohan.

Playwright Jen Silverman has had three prior plays off Broadway since 2011: *Crane Story*, *The Moors*, and *Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties*, which earned a 2019 Drama League Award nomination for Outstanding Production of a Play.

For *Spain* in New York, Silverman teams up with director Tyne Rafaeli, who has directed eight Off-Broadway shows in six years. *Spain* is her Second Stage debut, but she's directed shows for Lincoln Center Theater, Classic Stage Company, and Playwrights Horizons.

Second Stage is a theatre company exclusively dedicated to producing shows by living playwrights in its one Broadway and two Off-Broadway theatres.

## What to watch for

- *Spain* takes place at the onset of the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939. Historians have called it the "dress rehearsal" for World War II, as multiple other countries got involved in some way.
- Most of the characters in the play are fictional, but real-life author Ernest Hemingway is a character in *Spain*. He's known for writing about war — his classic novel *For Whom the Bell Tolls* is inspired by his coverage of the Spanish Civil War.
- The KGB operated for close to 40 years while the Soviet Union was in effect. It was a security organization designed to advance the agenda of the then-ruling Communist party, which included closely monitoring and manipulating media.
- Like a movie, *Spain* has a score, even though it's not a musical. Daniel Kluger composed original music for the play.
- Two years before *Spain*, Rafaeli staged *Selling Kabul*, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated play set amid the U.S.-Afghanistan war.

The lines between art, money, truth, and propaganda blur in this new Off-Broadway play. Follow a pair of ambitious filmmakers whose new Spanish Civil War film will move the public to change their minds and hearts. Does it matter that it's funded by the KGB?

Jen Silverman's clever drama follows two filmmakers in 1936 working on a game-changing Spanish Civil War epic. But it's funded by the KGB, blurring the lines between art and propaganda, truth and illusion.

Jen Silverman’s [*Spain*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/31353-spain-tickets) strikes early laughs when documentary filmmaker Joris Ivens (a frenetic Andrew Burnap) tells us – with a straight face – he is speaking in a Dutch accent. No, he’s not. It’s an early sign this play does not aim for factuality. *Spain* isn’t a historical play about the making of the propaganda documentary *The Spanish Earth*; rather, it’s about distortion and inflation inherent in making "informational" art.

Tyne Rafaeli’s direction hews more Hollywood noir than naturalism, the set darkened by Dane Laffrey’s scenic design, sculpted in harsh shadows by Jen Schriever’s lighting, and underscored by Daniel Kluger's thrumming music, which unravels the play like a thriller.

It’s a smart choice that ensnares *Spain* within the storytelling strategies tossed between the players. The year is 1936, and Joris received a proposition from the Soviet’s propaganda bureau: Craft a film in favor of the Spanish working class to persuade American sympathies and encourage donations to Spanish communists.

Joris and his girlfriend, fellow filmmaker Helen (Marin Ireland, in a go-for-broke performance), put their heads together and relay their progress to Soviet agent Karl (Zachary James, as towering as he was in the Met Opera’s *Akhnaten*), a frightening figure cloaked in shadow.

Silverman’s text deliberately evades specifics about the historical context of the Spanish Civil War, other than how the KBG wants to frame it and how the recruited artmakers follow suit. Joris confesses little investment in the cause (“I love the working class in theory,” he admits), but he covets the artistic opportunity to forge something beautiful — and longer than his standard 15 minutes.

The pair also acquire A-list author Ernest Hemingway (Danny Wolohan) as a screenwriter, his brevity unmatched. To fill in the gaps, they also recruit John Dos Passos (Erik Lochtefeld), a writer with more knowledge of Spain, but a red flag for the KBG due to his affinity for “thinking.” *Spain* milks riches from this feud between the former pals, theirs a war of Hemingway’s soundbites-and-slogans versus Passos’s introspection.

However, Silverman primarily emphasizes the rapport between Passos and Helen, the latter of whom is disillusioned with her involvement in the film. Silverman uses Helen to explore the entanglements of artistic integrity, ownership, and ethics in ever-shifting contexts. If you don’t technically own the art, how much of your vision trickles into the final product? How can you give it staying power in audiences' minds?

Shaped by the KBG’s political intents, Joris and Helen's cause is romanticized and simplified into “a war between the rich and the poor.” When they brainstorm storytelling shots, they can only dream up touristy symbols of Spain: Don Quixote, bulls, and guitars. They reduce the place to a metaphor they can shape.

In the play’s final minutes, Silverman builds *Spain* into a quasi-opera, a medium similarly notorious for exoticizing its settings. James unleashes two full-throated arias, the first an unexpected visual shorthand and the last a final thought bestowed upon the audience.

*Spain* makes a final jolt into modern times that doesn’t quite land, but it’s a commendable swing that shows how propaganda has evolved — and yet, hasn't changed much. As the final aria insists, theatricality is a universal tool of persuasion. You’re so seduced, you may not notice you’re implicated, too.
