In Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen off Broadway — the first Japanese manga to be adapted into an American musical — Colette (Beetlejuice's Sophia Anne Caruso) is a dreamer in twentieth century Paris who uses her writing to cast herself out of her place at a brothel. In her writing, she transforms the fantasies, confessions, and private sorrows of her eccentric clients, turning herself from object into observer. All the while, she has a desire even she can't outrun: a lingering, destructive attachment to Léon, her childhood love.
Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen is a thrilling and sharp new musical about passion, connection, and the power of writing. Moyoco Anno is one of Japan’s most renowned manga artists, known for her complex look into character psychology, and now her story comes to the stage. Now, Tony Award winner Rob Ashford directs this new musical from Sheik, who passed away in 2026, and Leah Nanako Winkler.
Manga is a distinctly Japanese art form originating in the 12th century: these graphic novels have nurtured artists and their works while building a global industry worth over $10 billion. A good musical must be grounded in a quality story—an engaging, evolving plot—and ideally features characters with depth, internal conflicts, and, of course, a compelling dramatic arc. Unfortunately, this production lacks all of that. The story itself is rather formulaic, though a nice production has been built around it, featuring good music—some of the songs are excellent. The visual aspect is interesting and aesthetic; the actors and actresses look great and wear excellent costumes, and their singing is superb. The venue is transformed into a club setting with a central stage and nice set changes. At times, I grew a bit weary of watching them constantly move scenery in and out, but that was manageable. Then there is the star at the center—she sings and acts wonderfully, but unfortunately, she doesn't quite look the part of a sexy hooker compared to the other actors; she has a slight build that lacks sufficient feminine curves. All in all, it’s a strange production—not particularly good in my opinion—and I don't think it will have a long run. This is entirely my personal opinion.
Gorgeous, intimate set design...really good music and vocals with an interesting story.
Sultry, exciting experience with fabulous actors, direction, costumes, and set to accompany it.
