A Private Mansion. A Broadway Deity. And an exorcism of hypocrisy.
This October, for a strictly limited engagement, Tony Award® winner and Broadway legend André De Shields opens the doors of the House of the Redeemer (7 E 95th) to only his most devoted disciples for a decadent spectacle. Within an historic Upper East Side mansion rarely opened to the public, De Shields and his ensemble invite just 100 guests per night to a sumptuous evening of ritual and revelry inspired by Molière’s notorious deceiver, Tartuffe.
Tartuffe takes place at the estate of Orgon, whose blind faith in the false holy man invites disaster, greed and lust. Eventually unmasking Tartuffe’s counterfeit piety, the family reveals the moral charade, banishing the demon of deceit, and restoring clarity, justice, and truth to the household.
With a razor-sharp translation by Ranjit Bolt (OBE) and direction by Keaton Wooden, this scandalous satire that once shocked Paris is reborn as a wicked parlor party: fast, furious, and unmistakably timely.
