Get Mexodus tickets on New York Theatre Guide to see this five-star new musical Metrograph says is "bringing beats, rhymes, and life to an untaught chapter of American history — Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson form a formidable double act." Those two performers are also the creators of this new musical that has earned rave reviews across the country; now, Mexodus in New York comes to Audible's Minetta Lane Theatre downtown for a strictly limited run.
In Mexodus off Broadway, a fresh story reveals a historic time: the untold journey of thousands who escaped slavery by crossing the Rio Grande into Mexico. You know the story of the Underground Railroad that ran North, but Mexodus takes audiences on the path that ran South.
Called “thrilling” by The Washington Post, this groundbreaking theatrical experience follows a freedom seeker and an unlikely ally as they forge a remarkable bond that transcends borders. It is “genius in motion… once the musical’s ferocity is set in motion, there’s no going back,” the San Francisco Chronicle wrote.
A two person live-looped musical, Mexodus reveals a story reclaimed and a legacy looped. Mexodus had its world premiere co-produced by Baltimore Center Stage and Mosaic Theater Company before it moved to Berkley Repertory Theatre. Now, it comes to New York City to wow audiences with award-winning might: the show won three Helen Hayes Awards, for Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Musical (Quijada), and Outstanding Director of a Musical (David Mendizábal).
Mendizábal has made a name for himself as a leader of The Movement Theatre Company, which produced What to Send Up When It Goes Down, which travelled the country; Mendizábal is also now Associate Artistic Director of Berkeley Repertory Theatre. See his genius work on stage: tickets to Mexodus in New York are now on sale.
