See this razor-sharp new satire about who really runs the world: powerful businesswomen. Or, they do, until a young newcomer, 24-year-old Katie, comes to their monthly luncheon with ideas of her own about how money and power operate. Chinese Republicans plays this winter at Roundabout Theatre Company's intimate Laura Pels Theatre, located within the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre.
Obie winner Chay Yew directs Susan Smith Blackburn finalist Alex Lin's world premiere — see Chinese Republicans off Broadway and eavesdrop on how businesswomen view the world. In this debut from a major American voice, three high-powered businesswomen meet for lunch every month to discuss their latest career triumphs. They've held this tradition for decades, and as the years keep growing so do their successes. They seem, in every way, unstoppable, growing into their own into an increasingly inclusive corporate atmosphere. However, their flow is disrupted when bright-eyed Katie joins their workforce.
Ready to navigate the world of corporate finance, Katie charts a course of her own without looking back. As all three of the women attempt to steer Katie towards what they’re sure is best, each is forced to grapple with how much they already have, and what they have sacrificed to climb the corporate ladder. As their careers skyrocketed, what debris was left behind?
Identity, power, and gender collide in this new play. Mixing dark humor that and the harsh realities of late-stage capitalism, this stunning world premiere production explores themes of assimilation, intergenerational conflict, and gender politics at work, all with a singular wit and compassion. A truly American story, Chinese Republicans marks the vital arrival of landmark playwright.
