About Trophy Boys

Experience Emmanuelle Mattana’s uproarious comedy about how far one high school debate team will go to win big. Following its acclaimed Australian debut, Trophy Boys plays off Broadway as the final show in MCC’s season. Tony Award winner Danya Taymor (The Outsider) directs this clever American premiere that satarizes views on feminism, with performances beginning this spring at the Susan & Ronald Frankel Theater.

“Feminism has failed women” is the prickly prompt given to the debate team of an elite all-boys prep school just one hour before the final match of their high school careers. Can they win the debate, or will they just be arguing in circles around a topic that is sure to be a difficult, and hilarious, one to unpack? Find out in Trophy Boys off Broadway.

In Mattana’s very funny new play, a debate team develops compelling arguments to demolish their sister school, but a “rumor” leaks about their team that threatens to blow up everything they have worked for. What starts off as a riotous satire turns into a sharp exploration of power and privilege, not only in high school but in the highest circles of political influence.

The original production garnered rave reviews, with the Sydney Morning Herald writing, “It is an exemplary instance of how art can advance and improve public debate in a thoroughly entertaining way.” It went on to call the play ”as impressive (and funny) a debut as I’ve seen in 20 years as a theatre critic, and the debate it covers – the causes of misogyny, sexual assault and gendered violence – couldn’t be more relevant or urgent.”

Is it the most impressive debut you’ll see this season? See it, and then debate about it after.
