About The White Chip

Sean Daniels's comedic play The White Chip, inspired by his own life, returns to New York following its successful run at 59E59 Theaters in 2019, when The New York Times named the show a Critic’s Pick. Don't miss your chance to get The White Chip tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

What is The White Chip about?

The White Chip play follows Steven, a thriving director whose life seems ideal. He has a happy marriage, supportive friends, and the potential to lead a top American theatre. However, his battle with alcoholism constantly gets in his way professionally and personally. The play showcases his descent from indulgence to rock bottom, and ultimately, his journey toward sobriety. Daniels uses dark humor and a non-linear narrative to explore the challenges of recovery.

Who is in the cast of The White Chip?

Joe Tapper, known for his role in You Can't Take It With You on Broadway, reprises his role as Steven from the 2019 production, starring alongside Crystal Dickinson and Jason Tam. Tony Award-nominated director Sheryl Kaller, recognized for her work on Broadway productions like Mothers and Sons and Next Fall, brings her keen eye to this remounted production. She also staged The White Chip off Broadway in 2019.

Daniels, drawing from his own struggles with alcoholism during his tenure as artistic director at Arizona Theatre Company and Merrimack Repertory Theatre, based Steven loosely on himself. He currently leads the Recovery Project at Florida Studio Theatre, aiming to destigmatize addiction and recovery through theatre and community outreach programs.

The show’s title comes from the Alcoholics Anonymous sobriety-chip system. A white chip symbolizes the first step towards sobriety, offered to individuals new or returning to A.A.
