About Covenant

York Walker's devilishly intriguing new play Covenant makes its world premiere with Roundabout Theatre Company in winter 2023. Get Covenant tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Enter a small Georgia town at Covenant off Broadway, where a once-struggling guitarist who lived there has now returned after a long time away. Only now, he's a major blues star. His fellow townsfolk think made a deal with the devil, a suspicion that overtakes the town — and brings to light many other people's secrets in the process. Suddenly, the line between truth and rumor is blurred for everyone.

This suspenseful, mythic play marks Walker's Roundabout debut. He and the Covenant play were the inaugural recipients of Vineyard Theatre's Colman Domingo Award, and Walker also developed the show at the Fire This Time Festival, Access Theatre’s 4 Flights Up Festival, and Arizona Theatre Company's Digital Play Series.

Tiffany Nichole Greene directs, returning off Broadway after directing the new play 53% OF with Second Stage Theater in summer 2022. She was the original resident director of Hamilton's national Philip Tour and has directed shows, often world premieres, at various regional theatres across the U.S.

Roundabout Underground presents Covenant in New York. The program, founded in 2008, is dedicated to new plays by emerging artists, presenting their work in Roundabout's Black Box space. Every Underground playwright also gets a commission for a future play at Roundabout.

Atmospheric gothic tale reveals, Deep secrets black family in 1936 small town ga

See it if riveting; using tropes horror story, shows how source of our ghost stories is often fear&shame, how religion&superstition overlap; eerie end

Don’t see it if some unnecessary subplots & cheesy horror effects; takes itself 2 seriously/would benefit from campy humor

Great writing, Great acting, Spooky

See it if you're looking for a thrilling evening of pretty scary theater with crackling dialog, strong cast, smart direction & great lighting design.

Don’t see it if horror stories are not your thing, get scared easily, don't like small intimate spaces or prefer a large production. Promising playwright!
