What is Gutenberg! The Musical about?

Gutenberg! The Musical, starring Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad, is about two friends, Bud and Doug, who are developing a musical about Johannes Gutenberg, the printing press inventor who created the Gutenberg Bible in 1455, one of the earliest books to be printed using movable type. The musical is filled with historical inaccuracies, but Bud and Doug are extremely passionate about their passion project. Watch the hilarity unfold as the duo presents their work in progress to Broadway producers.

Written by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the creative minds behind Beetlejuice, this metatheatrical experience is a love letter to the art of creating a show. Gutenberg! The Musical was developed with Upright Citizens Brigade in the early 2000s and went on to have a successful Off-Broadway run at 59E59 Theaters and The Actors’ Playhouse.

The show makes its Broadway debut with director Alex Timbers, who staged the Off-Broadway production of Gutenberg! The Musical. Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad star.

Who are Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad?

Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad are Broadway comedy veterans who first appeared together on stage in The Book of Mormon in 2011. They originated the roles of Elder Price and Elder Cunningham in the Tony-winning musical, earning Tony nominations for their performances.

Both have gone on to prolific stage and screen careers: Rannells is known for Broadway shows like Falsettos and TV shows like Girls, and Gad for playing Olaf in Frozen and Le Fou in the live-action Beauty and the Beast.

Fluffy, Hilarious, Great acting, Entertaining, Delightful

See it if Masterclass of acting, singing, and yes, "dancing". How to make a show about almost anything on a budget. A lot of hats, a box, and a cat

Don’t see it if Satire is not your thing. Jokes about an antisemitism can be hurtful for some.Show is not 90 minutes, but almost 120,with 1 intermission

Great acting, Dizzying, Clever, Great writing, Hilarious

See it if A must for fans of Gad and Rannells. Both are fantastic. The roles seem written especially for them, playing to their comedic strengths.

Don’t see it if It’s a two-hander. The set is purposefully threadbare. Those who don’t like dumb comedies should steer clear.
