An award-winning acting, writing, and directing team lead the world premiere of Mother Play, the latest Broadway show from Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel. Under Tina Landau's direction, Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons, and Celia Keenan-Bolger share the stage as a dysfunctional, but moving, family. Get Mother Play tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
Mother Play takes place on the outskirts of 1962 D.C., where Phyllis is and her teenage children, Martha and Carl, are moving into a new apartment. The teens live under the weight of Phyllis's very rigid expectations for who they should be. But with the help of gin and cigarettes, they cope with the fact that they're all changing as the world around them changes, too.
Tina Landau, the Tony-nominated and Drama Desk-winning director of SpongeBob SquarePants, stages Mother Play on Broadway with three stage veterans. Two-time Oscar and three-time Emmy winner Jessica Lange (Tootsie, Blue Sky, American Horror Story) also became a Tony winner in 2016 with Long Day's Journey Into Night, her third Broadway credit following fellow classics A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie.
Keenan-Bolger, playing her daughter, is no stranger to the idea — she won her Tony Award for playing the young Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird on Broadway. Jim Parsons, though best known for his Emmy-winning lead performance on The Big Bang Theory, is also a stage veteran, with Broadway credits like The Normal Heart and The Boys in the Band to his name.
Mother Play is Paula Vogel's newest work. Her other best-known plays include How I Learned to Drive, Indecent, The Baltimore Waltz, Hot 'N Throbbing, The Mineola Twins, and The Long Christmas Ride Home.
With Mother Play, Vogel returns to Broadway two short years after How I Learned to Drive, her Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, made its long-awaited Broadway debut after 25 years. In 2017, she made her Broadway debut with Indecent, and both shows were Tony-nominated for Best Revival of a Play and Best Play, respectively.
