Experience Swept Away on Broadway and get transported to the tempestuous ocean while meeting the adventurous crew that dares to brave it. Following its acclaimed, sold-out runs at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and then Arena Stage in Washington, DC, Swept Away comes to Broadway, running at the Longacre Theatre starting October 29.
When a violent storm sinks their whaling ship off the coast of a seaside town in Massachusetts, the four lonesome survivors face a reckoning: how far will they go to stay alive? And can they live with the consequences of the choices they will make in order to do so?
Tony Award winner Michael Meyer (Spring Awakening, American Idiot) directs the production to add to the starry team. Alongside the Avett Brothers and three-time Academy Award nominee John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator, Hugo), Tony Award nominee David Neumann (Hadestown) also brings this sweeping story to life.
Featuring beloved Avett Brothers songs such as “No Hard Feelings,” “Murder in the City,” and “Ain’t No Man,” Swept Away is inspired by the band’s 2004 concept album Mignonette, which was itself inspired by the story of the 1844 shipwreck of that name. After playing coast to coast, the musical now comes to Broadway to make a big splash. Audiences can expect heart-aching and beautiful Americana tunes set against the vast ocean for a show combining both giant spectacle and intimate stories from men at sea.
