About Swing State

Off-Broadway veteran Rebecca Gilman's latest play, Swing State, comes to New York in fall 2023 with Audible Theater. Get Swing State tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

The Swing State play centers on Peg, a widowed woman in rural Wisconsin still grieving her husband. Luckily, she at least has the company of Ryan, a friend and neighbor with a troubled past of crime and addiction. When she reports the theft of her husband's toolbox, however, she unwittingly sets off a chain of events that draw lines between community members, as they jump to quick conclusions about "outsiders" that seemingly threaten their way of life.

"The past few years have been so volatile and have left us all feeling vulnerable. But there's also been a great deal of joy," Gilman said of the inspiration behind her play. "As emotional states continue to swing pretty wildly, we’re faced with the question of where we find hope and how we connect again. We have to focus on who we love, and how we love them — and how we can help one another not only survive, but thrive."

Gilman's play made its world premiere fairly close to the heartland: in Chicago, one state away from Wisconsin. The production at the Goodman Theatre received critical acclaim, and now, all four cast members from Chicago, plus director Robert Falls, return for Swing State in New York.

Gilman is a Chicago-based playwright whose 25-plus-year career encompasses seven Off-Broadway plays, including Boy Gets Girl, Desire, Spinning Into Butter, and the Pulitzer Prize finalist The Glory of Living. She also adapted Carson McCullers's The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter for the stage.

The four-person cast includes Mary Beth Fisher and Anne E. Thompson, both of whom have performed in Gilman's plays before, alongside Kirsten Fitzgerald and Bubba Weiler.

Audible Theater presents multiple productions at the Minetta Lane Theatre per year, all of which are later recorded and released as audio dramas.
