Feel merry at Merry Me, a new play by Hansol Jung, the award-winning writer of Wolf Play. Check back for information on Merry Me tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
The Merry Me play is described as a "queer cocktail of restoration comedy and the Greeks, served with a heavy garnish of ridiculous." Set on an island during a wartime blackout, the show follows two main plots: that of Shane, a lieutenant who spends her time satisfying all the women on the base, and of the Navy psychiatrist, who receives a prophecy from an angel.
Messiness and drama ensue as Shane's affairs — including with the general's wife — get tangled up, and the psychiatrist embarks on a quest to save humankind.
Hansol Jung returns off Broadway following the premiere of her critically acclaimed and Lucille Lortel Award-winning Wolf Play at MCC Theater last season. Two actors from that production — Esco Jouléy and Nicole Villamil — return for Merry Me off Broadway.
Director Leigh Silverman is a Tony Award nominee for staging the musical Violet, and she won an Obie Award for directing In the Wake and Go Back To Where You Are. Her long directing career, which includes more than three dozen productions and counting, earned her the 2019 Obie Award for Sustained Excellence in Direction. Her last gig at New York Theatre Workshop was 2019's Hurricane Diane.
