Obie Award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins debuts his latest play, The Comeuppance, to finish out Signature Theatre's 2022-23 season. Get The Comeuppance tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
The Comeuppance is a play set just before a 20-year high school reunion, when some of the former classmates gather to pregame first. Self-described as the “Multi-Ethnic Reject Group” of their class, they rediscover each other's old selves — and drinks, drugs, and a truth-telling game reveal how they've all changed. But there's another guest lurking among them: Death, who narrates their fates throughout this dark comedy.
The Comeuppance replaces a previously announced production of Grass, another world-premiere play Jacobs-Jenkins was set to write and direct. For The Comeuppance off Broadway, Jacobs-Jenkins hands off directorial duties to Eric Ting, who staged Lloyd Suh's The Far Country with Atlantic Theater Company earlier this season.
Jacobs-Jenkins is a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for his plays Everybody and Gloria, and he's also a two-time Obie Award winner for Appropriate and An Octoroon. He has a longstanding residency at Signature Theatre; Appropriate and Everybody both premiered there.
His plays are known for putting a contemporary, experimental twist on classic shows, but others, like The Comeuppance, feature fully original plots.
