The Days of Wine and Roses musical marks bookwriter Craig Lucas and composer/lyricist Adam Guettel's first collaboration since 2005's The Light in the Piazza, which was nominated for 11 Tony Awards (including Best Musical) and won six. Like that beloved hit, Days of Wine and Roses is based on a 1962 film and promises romance and heartbreak in equal measure.
Days of Wine and Roses follows Joe (James) and Kirsten (O'Hara), a couple who fall in love in 1950s New York — and shortly thereafter fall into alcoholism. The power of their love is repeatedly tested as they struggle to rebuild their family without ruining each other.
Kirsten and Joe's story began as a 1958 teleplay by JP Miller, airing as part of the anthology drama series Playhouse 90. Four years later, Miller adapted his script into a screenplay, and the 1962 movie won the Oscar for Best Song. Its stars, Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick, also earned nominations.
Reprising their roles as the troubled lovers in Days of Wine and Roses on Broadway are two stage veterans. Tony Award winner and seven-time nominee Kelli O'Hara is known for her roles in The King and I; Kiss Me, Kate; South Pacific, The Light in the Piazza, and many more. Three-time Tony nominee Brian d'Arcy James recently starred as the Baker in Into the Woods on Broadway, and he's also known for roles in Shrek the Musical, Sweet Smell of Success, and Something Rotten!
