David Cale's new one-woman thriller, Sandra, promises a globetrotting (well, from the U.S. to Mexico) mystery that lures its title character into ever-increasing danger. On paper, that's true. But this Vineyard Theatre production, while it might make an absorbing novel, doesn't quite thrill as theatre, feeling less like a journey through choppy waters and more like a steady cruise. The play opens with Sandra (Marjan Neshat) relaying a conversation with Ethan, her best friend, in which he says:...
Sandra is at Vineyard Theatre in fall 2022. Get Sandra tickets in New York.
The Sandra play is a thriller/mystery show, with Sandra as the sole character on stage. Her closest friend, a composer and pianist, disappeared while on a trip to Mexico, and Sandra takes it upon herself to find him. She finds herself in more and more danger as she goes along, while also falling into a romance that complicates her quest even further.
The premiere of Sandra off Broadway was originally scheduled for 2020 but was postponed amid the pandemic. The show is by David Cale and is directed by Leigh Silverman; the two last worked together on another solo show, Harry Clarke, at Vineyard in 2018. That production won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show.
Cale has also previously collaborated with Matthew Dean Marsh, who wrote original piano music for Sandra. Marsh and Cale co-wrote the play-with-music We’re Only Alive for A Short Amount of Time, which premiered at The Public Theater in 2019 and won the Jeff Award for Best New Musical.
Starring in Sandra in New York is Marjan Neshat, who won a 2022 Drama Desk Award for her roles in two Off-Broadway plays last season: Pulitzer finalist Selling Kabul by Sylvia Khoury and Lucille Lortel winner English by Sanaz Toossi. Neshat also starred in Toossi's Wish You Were Here last spring.
