McGrath shares his life story with audiences at the Everything's Fine play, starting from when he was a teenager growing up in Texas. Among his many stories are of how his parents met, how his mom worked with famous creatives like Andy Warhol and Diana Vreeland, and how an eighth-grade teacher of McGrath's changed his life for good.

McGrath's best-known project is the movie Bullets Over Broadway; his screenplay for the movie got an Oscar nomination, and the film later became a Broadway musical. McGrath has written many other works for stage and screen: the book for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway; 12 Saturday Night Live episodes on TV; and the 1996 film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma, starring Gwyneth Paltrow. He also directed that work.

Lithgow directs McGrath in Everything's Fine off Broadway; this is his first directing gig in 45 years, since Broadway's Boy Meets Girl. Lithgow has an extensive acting resume, with two dozen Broadway credits, the most recent being Hillary and Clinton opposite Laurie Metcalf. He has won two Tony Awards, for The Changing Room, which was his Broadway debut, and Sweet Smell of Success.

Some of Lithgow's best-known films and TV shows are Dexter, Footloose, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Interstellar, Dreamgirls, and Terms of Endearment. He has earned six Emmys and two Golden Globes in his career, in addition to Grammy and Oscar nominations.
