About Fiddler on the Roof

The critically acclaimed National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (NYTF) production of Fiddler on the Roof, directed by Oscar and Tony Award winner Joel Grey, transfers to Off-Broadway's New World Stages. Get Fiddler on the Roof tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Fiddler on the Roof centers on Tevye, a poor milkman living in the fictional Russian shtetl of Anatevka. Tradition is very important to him, and he fights hard to hang onto his Jewish cultural traditions as outside forces threaten to make them obsolete. But the most unexpected threat to his traditions comes from right inside his own family. Tevye struggles with what to do when his three eldest daughters fall in love and ask for his blessing, rather than accepting their arranged marriages.

The NYTF production is performed entirely in the Yiddish language, accompanied by English and Russian supertitles. The story, however, remains the same and will still be recognizable to even non-Yiddish-speaking audiences. Also recognizable, even in translation, are the musical's famous songs like "If I Were a Rich Man," "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," and "Tradition."

NYTF first mounted its Fiddler on the Roof off Broadway at the Museum for Jewish Heritage in 2018, marking the first time the Yiddish version had been performed in the United States. (A one-night version of Shraga Friedman's translation was previously performed in Israel in 1965, a year after the original Broadway production opened.) After three extensions and universal critical acclaim, Fiddler on the Roof moved to the larger Stage 42 in the Theatre District in 2019.

The show went on to win Best Musical Revival prizes at the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Off-Broadway Alliance Awards. The New York Drama Critics Circle also offered Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish a Special Citation. Steven Skybell won a Lucille Lortel Award for his performance as Tevye, and he returns to his award-winning role for the 2022 production.

Also returning is director Joel Grey. Primarily an actor, he's best known for his onstage roles in Wicked (as the Wizard), Anything Goes (as Moonface Martin), Chicago (as Amos Hart), and Cabaret. His performance as the Emcee in the musical's Broadway premiere and film adaptation earned him a Tony and an Oscar, respectively.

The world-premiere production of Fiddler on the Roof opened in 1964 and made history by becoming the first-ever musical theatre production to surpass 3,000 performances on Broadway. The show also received nine Tony Awards in 1965, including Best Musical. The most recent Broadway revival — Fiddler's fifth — opened in 2015, only a few years before the first New York run of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish. Tony Award winner Danny Burstein played the role of Tevye.

Daidle deedle daidle daidle daidle deedle daidle dumb ... the story of tevye the dairyman in yiddish

See it if a golden musical classic, from the original creative team Bock, Harnick, Stein and Robbins. Timeless! Authentic!

Don’t see it if there’s no good reason not to see it, even if you’ve seen other productions and feel like you’ve had your fill of this MUSICAL TRADITION

A very, very good production of a wonderful show

See it if you know/love Fiddler; a terrific way to revisit! Gr staging, gr singing, strong acting. Lg cast, barebones prodn. Laughs & tears! Memorable

Don’t see it if you dislike reading supertitles (cumbersome). Sh cut Chavela dance. Rude audience (cells ring/loud talk). Nice theater; bring a sweater.
