Only Gold Information
Spend a few dreamy hours in the City of Love at Only Gold, a new dance musical from Tony-winning choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler and Brit Award-winning singer/songwriter Kate Nash. Get Only Gold tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
Only Gold is a musical set during a royal family's arrival in Paris. As if a city like Paris wasn't bustling enough, the event kicks everyone into high gear, from the wealthy nobles to the ordinary townspeople. And they're not just occupied with planning and activity — the arrival also brings about a reckoning that will change Paris and all its citizens. In the presence of the royals, people's loyalties and loves are put to the test, and they all must examine their choices.
Blankenbuehler makes his theatrical writing debut with Only Gold off Broadway; he co-wrote the show's book alongside veteran playwright and TV writer Ted Malawer. Blankenbuehler is best known as a choreographer (which he also does for this production, in addition to directing), having won three Tony Awards for his choreography on Hamilton, In the Heights, and Bandstand. He's received two additional choreography nominations for 9 to 5 and Bring It On: The Musical, and his Hamilton work also earned him 2018 Kennedy Center Honors. For career achievement in choreographing and performing, he won awards from the Drama Desks and Dance Magazine.
Only Gold is somewhat of a Hamilton reunion, as that show's orchestrator and conductor, Alex Lacaimore, provides musical arrangements for this show, and some cast members are Hamilton alumni.
Blankenbuehler and Malawer have teamed up with Kate Nash, who plays the narrator in Only Gold in New York in addition to writing its music and lyrics. Nash has been on the British music scene since the early aughts; her single "Foundations" and her subsequent debut album launched her career in 2007, and in 2008 she won the Brit Award for Best British Female Artist. She has since released three additional albums and has amassed a worldwide fanbase. TV fans also know her as Rhonda "Britannica" Richardson in the Netflix series GLOW, and she is the subject of a 2018 documentary, Kate Nash: Underestimate the Girl.
Only Gold is one of New York's latest dance musicals, in which there is not only plenty of choreography, but it's as central a storytelling tool, if not more, as the dialogue and songs. Other musicals known for their dancing include Cats, Newsies, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, A Chorus Line, An American in Paris, and MJ The Musical; alumni of all these shows and more are part of the Only Gold cast. Learn about more dance musicals on Broadway.
