About This Land Was Made

The world premiere of Tori Sampson's This Land Was Made will go up in spring 2023. Get This Land Was Made tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

This Land Was Made is set in an Oakland bar called Miss Trish's. It's 1967, when the Black Panther Party protested incidents of police brutality and others protested against the Vietnam War draft. Within the walls of the bar, though, radical change is just talk — that is, until it isn't. This play imagines the beginnings of a revolution with keen insight and humor, and it speaks to issues and conversations around change people still have today.

Sampson is best known for her professional debut play If Pretty Hurts Ugly Must Be A Muhfucka, which premiered in 2019 and was a New York Times Critic's Pick. One of the actresses from that play, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, also stars in This Land Was Made off Broadway.

Sampson has received the Paula Vogel Award in Playwriting from The Kennedy Center and was a finalist for other prestigious awards like the Relentless Award and Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Two of her plays have appeared on the Kilroys List, which recognizes excellent work by non-male playwrights that has yet to be produced.

Director Taylor Reynolds won the 2023 Obie Award for her direction of Tambo & Bones and Man Cave off Broadway. She also received a Drama Desk nomination for directing Will Arbery's Plano and won the LPTW Lucille Lortel Award in 2021 for her sustained excellence in theatre. Reynolds is also a producing artistic leader of the Harlem-based Movement Theatre Company.

See it if An outstanding production with stellar acting, directing & lighting. Kudos to the playwright of a truthful & riveting account of the 60s.

Don’t see it if I have no negative comments. This is a must see.

Relevant, Great writing, Great acting, Clever, Absorbing

See it if A well-performed,directed&designed play, set in a fam owned bar in OK CA in 1967,is abt racial justice&beg of Black Panthers w focus on Huey*

Don’t see it if An intense scene on how violence triggers violence.Umay not like humor mixed w very severe matter;here humor is used as a survival strategy.

Memorable, Writing *****, Absorbing, Important, Excellent acting

See it if This new play grabbed me from the first sentence + did not let go ! It is a depiction of the real life events surrounding the Black Panthers

Don’t see it if You don’t like plays about actual events that are tragic. Don’t see it if you cannot cope with Black dialogue, often loud +sometimes vulgar!

I'd dare say masterful, Clever, Mystery! yay, Gripping, holds your attention, Incredible acting, flawless

See it if you want to see a great play with a mystery and some of the best performances I've seen this season in any play. I was shocked how good

Don’t see it if you are triggered (like me) with racism being thrown in your face 24/7 on and off broadway & looking to skip shows to make a point
