Elyria Information

Atlantic Theater Company presents the world-premiere play Elyria in spring 2023. Get Elyria tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

The Elyria play is set in the Ohio town of the title. Two mothers make a life-changing deal, and in 1982, they meet again in Elyria after living their lives on two different continents, across two oceans, for the past 20 years. Their reunion forces them to face their complicated past and their tightly linked futures.

Playwright Deepa Purohit has family roots of her own in Ohio and India, and she makes her Off-Broadway debut with Elyria in New York. From 2000 to 2012, she co-founded and ran Rising Circle Theater Collective, which developed more than 20 plays by writers of color.

Purohit is also an actress who has appeared in Sex and the City 2, Elementary, and more.

Directing Elyria off Broadway is Awoye Timpo, who previously directed Ngozi Anyanwu's The Homecoming Queen for Atlantic Theater Company. In 2022, she directed the critically acclaimed revival of Alice Childress's Wedding Band at Theatre for a New Audience, and her other Off-Broadway credits include Good Grief and In Old Age.
