About A Bright New Boise

After premiering A Case for the Existence of God to acclaim with Signature Theatre in the 2021-22 season, Samuel D. Hunter returns for the 2022-23 season with A Bright New Boise, directed by Oliver Butler. Get A Bright New Boise tickets now.

Set almost entirely in the employee lounge of a Boise, Idaho Hobby Lobby, A Bright New Boise is a play centered on Will, a new employee at the store. He has just moved to Boise from northern Idaho, partly to reconnect with his estranged son and partly to distance himself from a tragedy at his shady former Evangelical church. The job offers Will a fresh start, fresh companionship with his coworkers, and a chance to reexamine how his religious beliefs affect the new life he's creating for himself.

The first production of A Bright New Boise off Broadway in 2010, winning Hunter the 2011 Obie Award for playwriting. The show was his breakout hit, which he followed up with other successes including The Whale (which won multiple awards and was adapted into a 2022 film starring Brendan Fraser) and Greater Clements (a 2020 Tony Award nominee).

Butler won an Obie Award of his own for the last show he directed at Signature, 2014's The Open House. He is also known for directing the Broadway and Off-Broadway productions of Heidi Schreck's Pulitzer-nominated show What the Constitution Means to Me.
