Where the Mountain Meets the Sea Information

The New York premiere of Jeff Augustin's Where the Mountain Meets the Sea is off Broadway in fall 2022. Get Where the Mountain Meets the Sea tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Where the Mountain Meets the Sea is a play about a father and a son who go on a journey — rather, two separate, but similar, journeys. The father, Jean, a Haitian immigrant, makes a once-in-a-lifetime trip to California from Miami, and his son, Jonah, makes that trip in reverse many years later. Along the way, Jonah discovers he inherited his father's interest in Appalachian folk music, giving the two men some common ground. This play collapses time and follows their two journeys at once, showing how the shared trip allow father and son to finally connect with each other after being unable to for so long.

Playwright Jeff Augustin has premiered multiple works in New York, including The New Englanders, also with Manhattan Theatre Club, and Little Children Dream of God at Roundabout Theatre Company. He is also a screenwriter on shows like The Morning Show and Saint X.

Composing and performing duo The Bengsons provide original music and live accompaniment to Where the Mountain Meets the Sea off Broadway. The Bengsons are known for previous Off-Broadway shows including Hundred Days at New York Theatre Workshop and The Lucky Ones at Ars Nova. The folk musicians have also released multiple albums and EPs, including a Hundred Days cast recording.

Directing Where the Mountain Meets the Sea in New York is Joshua Kahan Brody, a Princess Grace Award winner. He has previously directed shows including Fourteen Flights at the NY Fringe, winning an Excellence in Directing Award; and The Last Tiger in Haiti, another of Augustin's plays, at La Jolla Playhouse and Berkeley Rep in California.

The Bengsons and Brody both participated in the world premiere of Where the Mountain Meets the Sea at the Actors Theatre of Louisville, which commissioned the play. The show went up as part of the Humana Festival of New American Plays, but its run was canceled after one performance amid Covid-19.
