In the You Will Get Sick play, a man receives a medical diagnosis that changes his life. Scared, physically breaking down, and barely coping with the news himself, he decides to hire an older woman to tell his loved ones on his behalf. The aftermath of his decision, and the revelation of the diagnosis, changes his and her life in deep and powerful ways. This play highlights what it means to have a body, with all its difficulties and miracles alike.
Playwright Noah Diaz wrote You Will Get Sick in 2018, when he was in graduate school at the Yale School of Drama. The show went on to win the Jean Kennedy Smith Playwriting Award from the Kennedy Center, and the Roundabout production marks Diaz's Roundabout debut and New York professional debut. Two of his other plays, Richard & Jane & Dick & Sally and The Swindlers, previously went up at Baltimore Center Stage.
Director Sam Pinkleton is best known as a Broadway choreographer, having received a Tony nomination for choreographing Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 and also working on Amélie and the Daniel Craig-led revival of Macbeth, among other shows. On the directing front, his first Broadway gig was assistant director on 2012's The Lyons (the cast of which included You Will Get Sick star Linda Lavin), and he's also directed Runaways at New York City Center Encores! and Shakespeare In The Park, and Head Over Heels in Pasadena. You Will Get Sick off Broadway marks his Roundabout directorial debut.
Leading the cast of You Will Get Sick in New York is Linda Lavin, a Tony Award winner for Broadway Bound, and two-time Golden Globe Award winner and Emmy nominee for the sitcom Alice. She's earned an additional five Tony nominations for shows including The Last of the Red Hot Lovers, The Diary of Anne Frank, and The Lyons. Lavin was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2011.
