About Wagner's Der Fliegende Holländer

Following his acclaimed 2019 performances as Alberich in the Ring cycle, bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny stars as the accursed Dutchman in Wagner’s eerie drama, alongside incandescent soprano Elza van den Heever as the woman determined to redeem his soul. Maestro Thomas Guggeis makes his company debut on the podium, with tenor Eric Cutler as Erik and bass Dmitry Belosselskiy as Daland in François Girard’s ghostly setting.

World premiere: Court Opera, Dresden, 1843. Der Fliegende Holländer is the earliest of Wagner’s operatic creations to remain in the repertory. The two lead roles represent archetypes to which the composer would return, in one form or another, in most of his later works: the “otherworldly stranger” and the woman who sacrifices herself for his salvation. And as would be the case in many of Wagner’s later masterpieces, both the world of nature and of the supernatural are magnificently evoked in the score.

Slow, Masterful, Great singing, Fast for wagner, but still a little slow., That multimedia, though

See it if Impressive multimedia: it looked like a thunderstorm, Northern Lights, and a sunset were happening onstage(sequentially, not simultaneously)

Don’t see it if The story is a little slow, but this isn't one to skip; wonderfully sung and beautifully staged. Also? Short for Wagner (only 2.5 hours!).

Great staging, Masterful, Great singing, Enchanting, Delightful

See it if You like Wagner operas, wonderful singing and overall experience of Metropolitan Opera.

Don’t see it if You get bored and antsy sitting for 2.5 hours without intermission, want a lot of action on stage.

Great staging, Great singing, Slow, Epic

See it if You want an epic opera based on classic story of the Flying Dutchman (which is based on the Pirates of the Caribbean, right...?).

Don’t see it if You don't like Wagner (which I cannot fault you for). Also, its 2.5 hours with no intermission, so prepare yourself!

Short for wagner, New staging, Great music, Great singing

See it if you want to hear the amazing Dutchman of Tomasz Konieczny who dominated the evening in an economical new production, with other good singers

Don’t see it if you don’t like Wagner or grand opera, don’t like video backgrounds or long dangling ropes, or want to actually see the Flying Dutchman
