Razzle dazzle 'em! [*Chicago*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/22-chicago-tickets) has set new Broadway cast members, who will step into the production at the [Ambassador Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/ambassador-theatre) on April 10. They will join the [previously announced](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/olivia-holt-to-make-broadway-debut-in-chicago) Olivia Holt (*Cruel Summer*, *Kickin' It*) as Roxie Hart.

Kimberly Marable will assume the role of Velma Kelly, and Liam Fennecken  will play Amos Hart. Additionally, Charity Angél Dawson returns as Matron Mama Morton.

The current cast of *Chicago* includes Charlotte d’Amboise as Roxie Hart, Bianca Marroquín as Velma Kelly, James T. Lane as Billy Flynn, Hailey Swindal as Matron “Mama” Morton, Evan Harrington as Amos Hart, and R. Lowe as Mary Sunshine.

*Chicago* is Broadway's second-longest-running musical and longest-running revival. The Kander and Ebb musical follows murderesses Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly as they compete for the sympathy of the press in order to get acquitted — and become stars in the process.

## What is *Camelot* about?

*Camelot* is about the rise and fall of a once-glorious kingdom — and of the hopes its ruler had for it. At the beginning of the show, a young and newly appointed King Arthur frets about his marriage and his kingdom's future, but he and his wife Guenevere soon usher in an era of prosperity and peace.

Arthur faces a conflict of love and duty, however, when Guenevere and the knight Lancelot enter into a secret romance. And while Lancelot challenges Arthur for his wife, Arthur's son Mordered challenges him for the throne, throwing the future of Camelot into jeopardy.

## Who wrote *Camelot*?

Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe originally wrote *Camelot*. The pair wrote eight musicals, of which *Camelot* is one of the most well-known. Their other famous classics include *My Fair Lady*, *Gigi*, and *Brigadoon*. Lerner wrote the book and lyrics, while Loewe composed the music.

For the 2023 Broadway revival, Aaron Sorkin wrote a new book for *Camelot*. Sorkin is the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of films including *The Social Network*, *Moneyball*, *Molly's Game*, and *The Trial of the Chicago 7*. He is also best known for writing on the TV show *The West Wing* and adapting Harper Lee's novel *To Kill a Mockingbird* into a Broadway play.

## When did *Camelot* premiere?

One could say that the history of *Camelot* stretches back centuries to when the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table first surfaced. - 1485: Sir Thomas Malory compiles *Le Morte d'Arthur*, the first collection of legends about Arthur and the knights. These legends, however, first arose in Britain around the 12th century.
- 1958: T. H. White publishes *The Once and Future King*, a new collection of Arthurian legends based on Malory's work.
- 1959: Lerner and Loewe decide to adapt *The Once and Future King* into the *Camelot* musical.
- 1960: *Camelot* makes its world premiere in Toronto. The show then went up in Boston and finally on Broadway by the end of the year, undergoing heavy edits all along the way.
- 1963: After the Broadway production closes, *Camelot* goes on its first national tour. In ran concurrently, in part, with another bus-and-truck tour of the show.
- 1964: *Camelot* makes its London debut, running for 518 performances.
- 1967: The film adaptation of *Camelot* is released, winning three Oscars the following year.
- 1980: *Camelot* receives its first New York revival at the New York State Theater (now David H. Koch Theater) in Lincoln Center. Richard Burton reprised the role of Arthur, which he originated on Broadway, opposite Christine Ebersole.
- 1981: *Camelot* receives its first Broadway revival. Harris, who played Arthur in the film, reprised his role.
- 1982: Harris plays Arthur yet again in the first *Camelot* revival in London's West End.

## *Camelot* characters

- King Arthur: The ruler of Camelot. He begins the show as an idealistic young king who sees Camelot as a utopia. As the show goes on and he faces conflict, though, he changes as his dreams slip out of reach.
- Queen Guenevere: Arthur's wife, who helps him usher in Camelot's golden age. Soon, though, she falls in love with the knight Lancelot.
- Lancelot du Lac: An overconfident knight who hears of the Round Table and arrives at Camelot eager to join. While there, he falls in love with Guenevere.
- Mordred: Arthur's illegitimate son, who arrives in Camelot to seize power from his father.
- Merlin: A wise advisor to Arthur. In the original *Camelot* script and Arthurian legend, Merlin is a wizard.
- Morgan Le Fay: A scientist who aids Mordred's quest for power. The character was originally a sorceress in legends and in *Camelot*'s earlier scripts.
- Pellinore: An elderly friend of Arthur's family, whose visit to Camelot leads to him joining Arthur's inner circle. In the original Arthurian legends, Pellinore is a rival king who later befriends Arthur. 
- Knights of the Round Table: The Knights of the Round Table is an organization dedicated to maintaining harmony and order in Camelot. Three knights — Sirs Lionel, Dinadan, and Sagramore — are featured in *Camelot*.

## Onscreen adaptations of *Camelot*

*Camelot* received a film adaptation in 1967, featuring Richard Harris as Arthur, Vanessa Redgrave as Guenevere, Franco Nero as Lancelot, and David Hemmings as Mordred. Initially, Burton and Andrews were supposed to reprise their Broadway roles, but they declined.

The film received three Oscars and three Golden Globes. The Oscars were for Best Score, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design, and the Golden Globes for Best Original Score, Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy (for Harris), Best Original Song (for "If Ever I Would Leave You").

In addition, a filmed performance of the 1981 *Camelot* Broadway revival, also starring Harris, was broadcast on HBO in 1983. A 2008 concert version at Lincoln Center was broadcast on PBS.

## Fun facts about *Camelot*

- Jordan Donica sang the part of Lancelot in a 2019 concert production of *Camelot* at Lincoln Center Theater. It was a prophecy, as he now assumes the role in the 2023 revival!
- *Camelot* is closely associated with the Kennedy administration. The show premiered while he was president, and Jackie Kennedy said in an interview after his death that he enjoyed the music. Nowadays, his presidency is compared to Camelot as a brief period of national prosperity and harmony.
- Ironically, while Lerner and Loewe were writing *Camelot* — in which Arthur's wife falls for someone else — Lerner's own wife left him, which put the creation process on hold for a while.
- In his autobiography, Lerner wrote that the first-ever performance ran 4.5 hours (a potentially exaggerated figure) when it was supposed to be 2.5. Nonetheless, the show had to be trimmed.
- Certain elements have come and gone from *Camelot*'s various iterations. The song "Then You May Take Me to the Fair" was cut during the Broadway premiere, but restored in revivals. The song "Fie on Goodness!" was cut from the film. The character of Morgan Le Fay has been cut from most revivals. The 2023 revival, however, includes all these.

## *New York, New York*

NYC was abuzz with optimism and opportunities after World War II – a fitting setting for a story about young people looking to make their mark. Loosely based on the 1977 Martin Scorsese film about a pair of aspiring performers, the show features a new story by David Thompson and Sharon Washington that expands the field of characters.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical covers the life and times of Alexander Hamilton, the nation’s Founding Father who gazes at you from $10 bills. ## *Funny Girl*

NYC is the center of the showbiz galaxy, which sets the scene for this rags-to-riches-to-reach-for-tissues story of vaudeville star Fanny Brice, a role originated by Barbra Streisand in 1964 and now played by [Lea Michele](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/lea-michele).

## *Bob Fosse’s Dancin'*

New York City is drenched in history, and not all of it is postcard-pretty. In this dance revue revival celebrating legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, one vignette, "Big City Mime," summons the seedier 1970-80s era of NYC. The action is situated in Times Square near Port Authority, where arriving and departing passengers, tourists, sex workers, and passersby take in the colorful vibe. “The big city offers you… pleasure, gaiety, art, new experiences, adventure,” voices say. “Nowhere else can this be found except in the big city.”

## *A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical*

This bio-musical about pop superstar Neil Diamond weaves in more than 25 tunes from his catalog – and New York City is all over them. “Well, I’m New York City born and raised,” an older Diamond, played by Mark Jacoby, sings while performing “I Am... I Said.”

We see a young Diamond, played by Will Swenson, recall writing songs as a 15-year-old kid in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Later, he breaks through at the Bitter End music club in the West Village.

## *Good Night, Oscar*

The television industry has deep roots in NYC, and that figures significantly in this play by Doug Wright starring Sean Hayes. The action takes place in 1958, when pianist and author Oscar Levant first appeared on *Tonight Starring Jack Paar*. Levant’s sharp wit and unfiltered take on his personal issues made him magnetic to audiences.

Levant had his own strong connection to Broadway: He conducted orchestras,  wrote music for various shows, and was a close friend of iconic Broadway composer George Gershwin.

## *Merrily We Roll Along*

Big city, big dreamers. Three New York artists with grand plans for the future form the core of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1981 bittersweet musical, returning to Broadway for the first time beginning September 19. ## Anthony Rapp's *Without You*

Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner *Rent* is a New York musical through and through. [*Prima Facie*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25983-prima-facie-tickets) will host a digital lottery for tickets to its Broadway run, which begins at the [Golden Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/golden-theatre) on April 11. The strictly limited engagement runs through June 18.

*Prima Facie* will offer 10 lottery tickets to every performance for $10 each, including fees. The lottery is open from midnight to 10 a.m. every Wednesday for the following week's performances. Each person can request up to two tickets.

Winners will be notified by email and/or text once the lottery closes, and they will have five hours to claim their tickets. Additional drawings may be added if availability allows, and the purchase period may vary for those.

*Prima Facie* stars Emmy Award winner [Jodie Comer](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/jodie-comer) (*Killing Eve*) as Tessa, a sharp young barrister. ## 1979: Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury

They’re the original deadly duo, and they each won a Tony for their peerless star turns. Before slicing and dicing as the demon barber, Cariou notched Tony nods for the musicals *Applause* and *A Little Night Music*. Lansbury had already won Tonys for *Mame*, *Dear World*, and *Gypsy* before wigging out as Mrs. Lovett. Doubtless the role informed her work on *Murder, She Wrote*.

## 1980: George Hearn and Dorothy Loudon

Hearn, who stars in the filmed Broadway production of *Sweeney Todd* opposite Lansbury, and Loudon joined the cast in March 1980. He’d racked up five previous Broadway credits. Loudon, a comedian who could pour on the pathos, won a Tony as the horrible Miss Hannigan in *Annie* before replacing Lansbury as Lovett.

## 1980: Dennis Quilley and Sheila Hancock 

The London-set *Sweeney Todd* was bound to hit that city eventually, and it did so with this pair. A member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Quilley was known for his varied work in plays, musicals, and TV shows. Dame Hancock, an Olivier Award winner for *Cabaret* in 2007, was nominated for the prize five other times, including for her turn as Mrs. Lovett.

## 1989: Bob Gunton and Beth Fowler

When *Sweeney Todd* got its first Broadway revival in 1989, Bob Gunton and Beth Fowler had big oven mitts to fill. And they did so, both earning Tony nominations of their own. Known for playing authoritarian figures, Gunton earned a Tony nod as Juan Peron in *Evita* and later made an indelible movie mark as the corrupt warden in *The Shawshank Redemption*. Fowler is best known nowadays for her role in another criminal story: as Sister Jane Ingalls on the TV series *Orange Is the New Black*.

## 2005: Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone 

English director John Doyle’s stripped-back Broadway revival began in London in 2004. Here, actors doubled as musicians — including its Tony-nominated leads. Cerveris, who won Tonys for *Assassins* and *Fun Home*, was a guitar-strumming Sweeney. [LuPone](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/patti-lupone), a theatre supernova with Tonys for *Evita*, *Gypsy*, and *Company*, tooted the tuba as Nellie Lovett. Manoel Felciano, now in the first Broadway revival of [*Parade*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26500-parade), also scored a Tony nod as the young apprentice Tobias.

## 2007: Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter

How about a shave? Depp’s previous work as Edward Scissorhands may have prepared him for his cinematic role as the barber bent on vengeance for his lost wife and daughter. Carter’s off-kilter edge served her well as Lovett. Director Tim Burton’s movie also included Alan Rickman as the merciless Judge Turpin and Sacha Baron Cohen as the cartoony con man Pirelli.

## 2012: Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton

Ball, a British stage star known for *Aspects of Love* and *The Woman in White* on Broadway, and *Vera Drake* Oscar nominee Staunton, played the demon barber and daft baker for six months in London's West End. The show first had a hit run at the Chichester Festival Theatre in the fall of 2011.

## 2014: Bryn Terfel and Emma Thompson

Clutching a rolling pin with a glint in her eye, Thompson proved in her New York stage debut that, yes, the *Sense and Sensibility* and *Howards End* Oscar winner sings! Ditto Sir Terfel, a Welsh opera star famous for wrapping his burly voice around Mozart, Strauss, and Wagner. They starred in a NY Philharmonic concert production of *Sweeney Todd* and reprised their roles a year later at the London Coliseum.

But they were far from the only stars in the New York staging. [Audra McDonald](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/audra-mcdonald) popped up as the Beggar Woman, [*Some Like It Hot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24262-some-like-it-hot-tickets)’s [Christian Borle](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/christian-borle) played Pirelli, and Jay Armstrong Johnson, now in *Parade*, was the lovestruck Anthony.

## 2017: Jeremy Secomb and Siobhán McCarthy

In this site-specific Off-Broadway production, British stage stars Secomb and McCarthy reprised their lead roles from a London premiere. Audiences watched the musical at a working pie shop, where savory pastries (filled with veggies or chicken, not priest or poet) were served. Norm Lewis and [*Bad Cinderella*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26514-bad-cinderella-tickets)’s Carolee Carmello later took over the leads in the production

Fun fact: Australian actor Jamie Jackson played Judge Turpin in that production, and he now reprises the role in the 2023 Broadway revival.

## 2023: Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth

The first season of the Apple TV+ series *Schmigadoon!* spoofed a bunch of Golden Age Broadway musicals, and its second season focuses on the darker fare of the '70s. Think *Cabaret*, [*Chicago*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/22-chicago-tickets) — and, of course, *Sweeney Todd*. Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth's respective characters might be named Dooley Flint and Miss Codwell, but they're clear stand-ins for the barber and baker. Chenoweth even sports a Lansbury-esque hairdo to prove it.

Cumming and Chenoweth are both stage and screen vets, and Tony-winning ones at that. Cumming won for playing the Emcee in *Cabaret*, and Chenoweth won for playing Sally in *You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown*, though she remains best known for originating the role of Glinda in [*Wicked*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/1-wicked-musical-tickets).

## 2023: Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford 

[Groban](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/josh-groban) is a singing sensation behind hits like “You Raise Me Up,” but he's proven his versatility: His Broadway debut in *Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812*, earned him a Tony nomination.

[Ashford](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/annaleigh-ashford), a comedic whiz, won a Tony for *You Can’t Take It With You* and headlined the CBS sitcom *B Positive*. They “deliver exactly what they’re best at,” reads New York Theatre Guide’s four-star review.

We've been expecting them. Levi Holloway's horror play made its world premiere in Chicago to acclaim in 2019. The show follows a couple stranded in the mountains who shelter at a cabin, but their surroundings — and hosts — get creepier as days go by and they realize they're trapped.

## Who is in the *Grey House* Broadway cast?

Newly announced *Grey House* cast members include Cyndi Coyne as The Ancient, Colby Kipnes as Squirrel, Alyssa Emily Marvin as A1656, and Eamon Patrick O’Connell as The Boy.

The story of how fame and money break them apart is told in reverse chronological order.

The starry trio reprise their roles from a critically acclaimed 2022 Off-Broadway revival of the musical at New York Theatre Workshop, directed by Maria Friedman. [New York Theatre Guide's four-star review](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/merrily-we-roll-along-off-broadway-review-jonathan-groff-daniel-radcliffe-lindsay-mendez) calls the production "stirring" and reads, "The story’s consideration of the fragility of friendships stands out."

Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's musical hasn't appeared on Broadway since 1981. The prolific duo is known for collaborations with various writers, directors, and actors, and their Broadway premieres continued even after Ebb’s death at age 76 in 2004. ## 1965: *Flora, The Red Menace*

Kander and Ebb’s first Broadway collaboration is based on the novel *Love is Just Around the Corner*. Set in Depression-era New York, the romantically and politically charged musical lasted around three months. That was long enough for its star, Liza Minnelli, to win a Tony Award and begin a long collaboration with the pair.

## 1966: *Cabaret*

A ratty club in Germany amid the Third Reich’s rise to power seems an unlikely musical setting, but countless audiences came to the cabaret. Based on Christopher Isherwood’s stories and the play they inspired (John Van Druten’s *I Am A Camera*), the show is a masterwork that earned the duo their first Best Score Tony win.

The musical, directed by Harold Prince, opened in 1966 and ran for nearly three years, later Willkommen-ing audiences back to Broadway in 1987, 2004, and 2014 revivals. Plus, the *Cabaret* film starring Minnelli and Joel Grey, who reprised his Tony-winning role as the emcee, dropped in 1972 and has since become one of the most celebrated movie musicals in history. 

## 1968: *The Happy Time*

This bittersweet show starring Robert Goulet follows a globetrotting photographer who returns to his hometown in Canada to search for something missing in life. It earned Kander and Ebb a Tony nomination for Best Score, and the show’s happy time on Broadway ended after 286 performances. 

## 1968: *Zorba*

Two months after their previous show closed, this dark-streaked musical, adapted from the novel *Zorba the Greek*, launched its 305-performance run. The songwriting duo’s attraction to edgy material continues here, including in the song “Life Is.” It matter-of-factly states that "life is what you do while you’re waiting to die.” The show came back to life in a 1983 revival. 

## 1971: *70, Girls, 70* 

Ebb, who wrote the book and lyrics, and Kander were in a lighter mood for this work about senior citizens who steal and resell furs to finance the rescue of their retirement home. The show opened in April 1971 but made a quick getaway from Broadway, running for only 35 performances.

## 1975: *Chicago* 

Regarding celebrity criminals and the true crime craze, this story of merry man killers Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly – roles originated by Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera – was way ahead of its time. *Chicago* was up for 11 Tonys, including Best Score and Best Book (co-written by Ebb), but the show went home empty-handed. Nowadays, the six-time Tony-winning 1996 revival is the second longest-running show in Broadway history.

## 1977: *The Act*

Michelle Craig, a movie-star-turned Las Vegas performer played by Minnelli (who won a Tony), recalls her rocky career moves and romances in this show that opened in October 1977 and ran for 233 performances.

Among the tunes in the Tony-nominated score is “The Money Tree,” in which Michelle wises up about the guy in her life: “The day will come; he’ll come running to me the day the sun turns black and there’s a money tree.”

## 1981: *Woman of the Year*

The duo found creative inspiration for this Lauren Bacall star vehicle in the 1942 Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn comedy about rival reporters falling in and out of love. Bacall sings about that in the witty number “I Wrote the Book,” in which her character notes that she is up on everything – including how to lose a man.

Likewise, Kander and Ebb continued to show they wrote the book on songwriting, winning a Tony for their score. The show opened in March 1981 and closed after 770 performances in just under two years.  

## 1984: *The Rink*

The songwriting team notched another Tony nomination for this score. *The Rink* takes place at a decrepit roller rink, where a mom and daughter (played by Rivera and Minnelli) deal with various challenges, including each other. The show opened in August 1984 and rolled along for 204 performances before calling it a day. 

## 1992: *Kiss of the Spider Woman*

Based on the Manuel Puig novel about a prisoner in Latin America who escapes into a fantasy world, *Kiss of the Spider Woman* was adapted into an Oscar-winning movie before becoming a Tony-winning musical.

Kander and Ebb took home the Best Score Tony, one of seven prizes for the show, including Best Musical and Best Actress for Rivera in the title role. The show opened in May 1993 and had its last kiss in April 1995 after 904 performances.

## 1997: *Steel Pier*

Gritty settings and scenarios become Kander and Ebb. No wonder this show about lost souls in Depression-era Atlantic City appealed to them. Their score got a Tony nomination, but the show ran just 76 performances after its April 1997 premiere.

## 2006: *Curtains*

This backstage murder mystery musical comedy starring David Hyde Pierce opened in March 2007 – making it the duo’s first new show since Ebb’s death – and ran 511 performances. The Tony-nominated score featured “Show People,” an upbeat nod to theatre performers “who live in a world of their own” and who are “born every night at half-hour call.” Write what you know, they say – and Kander and Ebb knew actors.

## 2010: *The Scottsboro Boys* 

“How about a musical about racism, rape, and Jim Crow?” New York Theatre Guide noted in its [four-star review of *The Scottsboro Boys*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/the-scottsboro-boys-0). It added that “if anyone is going to handle” those topics, it’s Kander and Ebb, who are both credited for music and lyrics in their Tony-nominated score. The story recounts true events from 1931 Alabama, where nine young Black men were accused of raping two white women. The show, directed by Susan Stroman, was framed as a minstrel show, which inspired protests. It ran 49 performances.

## 2015: *The Visit*

A star vehicle for Rivera, this show about a scorned woman who engineers the ultimate revenge on her ex-lover is based on Friedrich Duerrenmatt's 1956 play. The show took 15 years of development to reach Broadway. *The Visit* was up for five Tonys but won none, and the musical closed after 61 performances. 

## 2023: *New York, New York* 

Listen up for Kander and Ebb hits including the title blockbuster and “But the World Goes Round” from Martin Scorsese’s 1977 film. The duo’s songs and the setting — 1946 New York — are the only carryovers from the screen, though. This musical features a new plot about artists seeking success in the city.

*New York, New York* also includes new songs by Kander and Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, bridging old and new songwriting talents. You’ll want to be a part of this Kander and Ebb collaboration.

Vineyard Theatre is a nonprofit theatre company located near Union Square on East 15th Street. The venue first opened in 1981 and has a capacity of 132 seats.
