Harmony: A New Musical Information

More than 20 years after its world premiere, Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman's musical Harmony is bowing in New York. The National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, acclaimed for its 2019 production of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish, will present a limited seven-week engagement of the show in spring 2022. Harmony tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.

Harmony is a musical about the Comedian Harmonists, a globally successful German musical group that experienced its heyday in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The six-man ensemble was renowned for perfoming complex arrangements of music ranging from classic folk tunes to popular music of the era. Though their harmonies were smooth, their careers were not — the Harmonists' inclusion of Jewish members brought them trouble when the Nazis came to power. Harmony relates this true story, based in part on The Comedian Harmonist Archive, curated by the late Dr. Peter Czada.

Harmony first premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego in 1997. It went on to play the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia in 2003 — originally intended as a pre-Broadway tryout — and the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta in 2013. Though it did not end up playing Broadway, it will now finally bow in New York with the Drama Desk Award-winning National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene. The NYTF's production will go up at the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust.

Our review

A bio-musical about a historic male singing group whose members were cobbled together from humble backgrounds, showing in retrospect how they achieved a meteoric rise to fame amid the forces — internal disputes, personal troubles, sociopolitical forces — that threatened to tear it all down. I could be describing Ain't Too Proud, Jersey Boys, or now, Harmony. Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman's musical about the Comedian Harmonists, a German choral group whose fame collided headfirst with the...
