Daryl Roth presents the New York premiere of new musical Between the Lines at the Tony Kiser Theater, based on the novel by New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult and her daughter Samantha van Leer. Between the Lines tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.
Between the Lines became Picoult's first young adult novel and van Leer's first published work when it was released in 2012. The book was a #1 New York Times bestseller and a Publisher's Weekly Bestseller, and it was nominated for the Young Adult Library Services Association's 2013 Top Ten Teen Award. Now the duo's work is entering a new chapter with the premiere of the musical adaptation.
The protagonist of the Between the Lines musical, 17-year-old Delilah, struggles with loneliness. Her mother is overprotective, she never knew her father, and she has trouble fitting in at her new school in a new city. Her source of solace is the titular fairytale book, and her attachment to it only further separates her from those around her, who can't understand Delilah's fascination with the book. She spills all her troubles to the book character Prince Oliver, and when one day he talks back, reality and fantasy blur as the two develop a relationship.
The musical premiered in 2017 at Kansas City Repertory Theatre, where the musical broke box office records. A sold-out concert version of Between the Lines went up at Manhattan's 92Y in 2018, and the full-fledged New York premiere was originally slated to start performances at the Kiser in April 2020. The production was delayed indefinitely due to the pandemic, but Between the Lines is finally slated to play a limited engagement in summer 2022.
