About Between the Lines

Daryl Roth presents the New York premiere of new musical Between the Lines at the Tony Kiser Theater, based on the novel by New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult and her daughter Samantha van Leer. Between the Lines tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.

Between the Lines became Picoult's first young adult novel and van Leer's first published work when it was released in 2012. The book was a #1 New York Times bestseller and a Publisher's Weekly Bestseller, and it was nominated for the Young Adult Library Services Association's 2013 Top Ten Teen Award. Now the duo's work is entering a new chapter with the premiere of the musical adaptation.

The protagonist of the Between the Lines musical, 17-year-old Delilah, struggles with loneliness. Her mother is overprotective, she never knew her father, and she has trouble fitting in at her new school in a new city. Her source of solace is the titular fairytale book, and her attachment to it only further separates her from those around her, who can't understand Delilah's fascination with the book. She spills all her troubles to the book character Prince Oliver, and when one day he talks back, reality and fantasy blur as the two develop a relationship.

The musical premiered in 2017 at Kansas City Repertory Theatre, where the musical broke box office records. A sold-out concert version of Between the Lines went up at Manhattan's 92Y in 2018, and the full-fledged New York premiere was originally slated to start performances at the Kiser in April 2020. The production was delayed indefinitely due to the pandemic, but Between the Lines is finally slated to play a limited engagement in summer 2022.

See it if Into the Woods meets Dear Evan Hansen meets Mean Girls/ It was fun and cute. I had fun.

Don’t see it if You can't tolerate light and fluffy.

Fluffy, Refreshing, Delightful, Exquisite

See it if I attended the third preview of this entertaining Musical. Three understudies filled in including the main actress and I wouldn't have even

Don’t see it if Known they were very good. Can be a little silly and Fluffy at times geared more for a younger audience but I found it quite enjoyable.

Entertaining, Delightful, Great singing, Great acting, Enchanting

See it if Move over Wicked, there is a new fantasy show in town & P.S., I loved it. The lead male & female roles are very well-casted.

Don’t see it if The show could be ready for Broadway with a few tweaks, including the sets & 2 cast changes.

Romantic, Great staging, Great singing, Entertaining, Delightful

See it if Still young (even deep inside), believe in fairytales, enjoy good voices, costumes, staging, lighting, dancing dog, and ..mermaids-feminists

Don’t see it if 24 songs are too much for you (2 of them can easily go bye bye), you are too cool for fluffy musical with predictable storyline
