Long Day's Journey into Night is a play that is often called one of the greatest not only in O'Neill's canon, but in the history of American theatre. The drama centers around the four members of the Tyrone family, each of whom is trying to face the consequences of their own failings and those of their family all at once. During the course of one day at the family's home on the Connecticut shore, the tensions between them all come to a head.

James, the father, is an actor who became rich playing one character his whole career, but now feels like he missed out on more fulfilling, diverse work just to get money. His wife, Mary, has just ended treatment for a morphine addiction but quickly relapses. Tension is especially high between her and her son Edmund, who worries about his mother's addiction while dealing with his own terminal illness. Finally, his older brother Jamie has become so disillusioned with his family that he's drowning his problems in alcohol and sex.

The play is semi-autobiographical, with each character loosely based on a member of O'Neill's own family. O'Neill himself is represented by Edmund, the aspiring poet who spent time overseas and suffers from tuberculosis. O'Neill's own father was an actor like James, his mother suffered the same addiction as Mary, and his brother died of alcoholism, Jamie's impending fate. 

Even the setting of the play — Monte Cristo Cottage in New London, Connecticut — was the O'Neill's actual family home. It is now owned and operated by the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center and furnished as the play describes. Tony-nominated director Robert O'Hara directs the updated production of Long Day's Journey into Night Off-Broadway, which will also be released as an Audible Original.
