Dana H. transfers to Broadway following a critically acclaimed run at Vineyard Theatre in 2020. The play is presented in a repertory season with Is This A Room at the Lyceum Theatre. Dana H. tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.
Dana was a chaplain of a psych ward when she met a charismatic patient, an ex-convict searching for redemption. Dana H. tells the harrowing true story of what happened next — Dana was held captive by the man in a series of Florida motels, disoriented and terrified, for five months. Told in Dana's own words and reconstructed for the stage by her son Lucas Hnath, this innovative work shatters the boundaries of the art form and our understanding of good and evil.
Deirdre O'Connell stars as Dana in a performance dubbed "astonishing" by Time Out and celebrated for its "near-perfect specificity" by The New York Times. O'Connell lip-syncs to audio of Dana herself telling her story, with Dana's voice fed to O'Connell through earpieces.
The New York premiere of Dana H. was originally part of the 2019-2020 Off-Broadway season at Vineyard Theatre, but the run was cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic. Now the critical darling returns to New York in repertory with Is This A Room — also a Vineyard Theatre transfer.
Playwright Lucas Hnath's text is drawn from multiple interviews with his mother Dana. The interviews were conducted by Steve Cosson, an award winning experimental theater artist in his own right. The text not only reveals Dana's gripping tale, but also delivers remarkable insight into the mind of a singular and fascinating woman.
