Enter a world where magic is real at Greenwich House Theater. A Midsummer Night's Dream meets old-world fairy tales in Fairycakes, a new comedy from five-time Tony nominee, Drama Desk, and two-time Outer Critics Circle Award winner Douglas Carter Beane. Fairycakes tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.
Fairycakes is a play featuring a cast of characters pulled from Shakespeare and classic fairytales. The eclectic group all collide, much like in Midsummer, in an enchanted forest. Magic and mischief lead the characters to fall in love in the unlikeliest of pairs, and feelings that come about only with magical help soon grow as one midsummer's night turns to the next.
The all-star cast features the Tony Award-winning actress Julie Halston, alongside Emmy Award winner Mo Rocca, Emmy and Grammy Award winner Kristolyn Lloyd, Emmy nominee Jackie Hoffman and Drama Desk Award nominee Arnie Burton. The cast is completed by Kuhoo Verma, Ann Harada, Jamen Nanthakumar, Jason Tam, Chris Myers, Z Infante, and Sabatino Cruz.
Beane, who also directs Fairycakes, has written his comedy entirely in verse, calling to its Shakespearean source material. His story, however, also mixes in contemporary elements and beloved fairytales.
He is known for his work on multiple contemporary Broadway musicals, including Xanadu (which won Beane a Drama Desk Award for Oustanding Book of a Musical), Lysistrata Jones, Sister Act (earning him a Tony nomination for Best Book of a Musical), and the 2013 revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, for which he wrote a new book.
