About Trevor

The New York premiere of Trevor the Musical will open at Stage 42 in fall 2021, with performances beginning October 25. Trevor tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.

Trevor is a musical based on an original story and screenplay by Celeste Lecesne for the 1994 Academy Award-winning short film, Trevor, which was directed by Peggy Rajski and produced by Randy Stone and Peggy Rajski. The story's titular character is a 13-year-old boy in 1981, who discovers that he is gay when he develops a crush on a classmate. Aside from this, he is obsessed with Diana Ross and enjoys performing in student theatre — because of all these attributes combined, Trevor's friends bully him and his parents openly disapprove.

The story is ultimately one of self-acceptance and discovery, one that won an Oscar for Best Short Subject at the 1995 Academy Awards. (The film shared the prize with Franz Kafka's It's a Wonderful Life.) The film is also the namesake of The Trevor Project, founded by Lecesne, Rajski, and Stone. The nonprofit organization operates a 24/7 crisis and suicide prevention hotline for LGBT youth to receive help from trained counselors.

The new musical adaptation of Trevor off-Broadway, directed by Marc Bruni and choreographed by Josh Prince, features a book and lyrics by Dan Collins and music by Julianne Wick Davis. The show had its world premiere at the Writers Theatre in Glencoe, Illinois in 2017, prior to transferring to Stage 42 for its New York premiere.
